Obituary
James F. Montgomery, age 95, of Reedsburg, passed away on Wednesday, May 25, 2016. He was born in a farm house in Mauston, WI on September 17, 1920 the son of Lyman Henry and Mathilda (Haugh) Montgomery. He was a Veteran of World War II serving with the U.S. Coast Guard from October 27, 1942 to February 26, 1946. During his tour of duty, Jim served or visited Bermuda, Tunisia, French Morocco, Algiers, Gibraltar, Panama, Nicaragua and Costa Rica. He escorted eight convoys to North Africa from 1943-1945 on the U.S.S Falgout D.E. 324 making crossings of the Atlantic Ocean, five Mediterranean crossings and four Caribbean trips. He crossed the Equator and sailed the Pacific from Peru to Nicaragua. His Final Mission was to Balboa Submarine Base in Panama Canal Zone. He was united in marriage to Ardene Mahr on December 27, 1945. Jim farmed for many years and later worked at Mirror Lake State Park and Prange Way Department Store. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, NASCAR, playing cards, football, the Cubs, bowling, square dancing and he cherished the time spent with his family. He was a faithful member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church; the Knights of Columbus and the Reedsburg V.F.W. Post 1916. He was also a former member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles. Jim was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Ardene on September 6, 2008; sisters: Dorothy Brandt, Betty Bedford; brothers: Charles and Peter Montgomery. He is survived by his children: John (Pam) Montgomery of Wisconsin Dells, Janet Montgomery of Reedsburg, Jim (Marcie) Montgomery of La Valle, Joe (Debbie) Montgomery of Reedsburg, Jerry (Linda) Montgomery of La Valle, Julie (Dave) Louis of Cazenovia, Jenny Montgomery of Reedsburg; Grandchildren: Greg, Amy, Mike, Afton, Danielle, Kelsey and Sierra; Great grandchildren: Peter, John, Genevieve, Andrew, Oliver, Erin, Cassidy, and Shailyn; A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated for James on Tuesday, May 31, 2016, at 11:00 am, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. The Reverend David Carrano will officiate. Visitation will be on Monday, May 30, 2016, at Farber Funeral Home in Reedsburg from 4:00 pm until 8:00 pm, and at the church on Tuesday, from 10:00 am until the time of service. Burial will take place with military rites in Calvary Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials to Sacred Heart School Endowment Fund or the Reedsburg VFW would be appreciated. The Farber Funeral Home is assisting the family with the arrangements.
