Russell E. “Chuck” Barnett, 81, of Shinnston, passed away on Wednesday, July 6, 2016 at his residence. He was born in Lumberport, January 19, 1935, a son of the late John James Edward and Orpha Evelyn Copenhaver Barnett. He is survived by his wife Amanda E. “Peggy” Markley Barnett, whom he married June 11, 1978, one son, Robert Barnett and his wife Emily, Fairmont, one daughter Carrie Thomas and her husband Mike, Lost Creek, two step-sons, Danny Hayhurst and his wife Dorene, Lumberport, and Kenny Hayhurst, Clarksburg. Five grandchildren, Christopher Michael Thomas, Lost Creek, Hannah Marie Barnett, Fairmont, Amanda Hayhurst Elder and her husband Travis, Lumberport, Cassy Hayhurst Delrio and her husband Carl, Lumberport, and Kendra Hayhurst, Clarksburg, four great-grandchildren, Daelynn, Kaeleigh, and Hayden Elder, and Josh Hayhurst, one brother, James Barnett and his wife Jeanine, Sardis, and several nieces and nephews. He was also preceded in death by three brothers, Harrison Barnett, John Barnett, Jr., and Thomas Barnett and one sister, Alice Skinner. Mr. Barnett retired from the military with 20 years service having served with the US Marines, US Air Force, and US Navy where he was a member of the Seabees. He served in both the Korean and Vietnam conflicts. He was a volunteer at the United Hospital Center and a certified nursing assistant. Chuck was a gifted musician that played many instruments and enjoyed going to the nursing home with the Cambria New Covenant Fellowship Nursing Home Ministry of which he was a member. He was an avid reader and historian. He loved to watch old war movies and history documentaries. He loved to travel and was a fantastic husband, father, and the best grandfather you could ask for. A military salute will be held at the Perine Funeral Home, 1348 S. Pike St., Shinnston, at 11am, Saturday, July 9. At his request, Mr. Barnett will be cremated following the service.
