Ondelea Norris Obituary

Ondelea Phillips Hamilton Norris said goodbye to her earthly home and hello to her heavenly one on Saturday, April 2, 2016, at the age of 89, at the Personal Care Home of Angie Jones in Wallace, WV where she has called her home for the past 4 years. Ondelea was born on the 29th day of April in 1926 in Ten Mile, Upshur County, WV. She was one of four daughters born to George "Sherman" and Alvertie "Allie" Crites Phillips. She was twice married and preceded in death by both her husbands. Her first husband was Fred "Tiny" Hamilton whom she married on the 16th day of August 1946 and her second husband was Adam "Gale" Norris whom she married on the 19th day of December 1964. Ondelea was always a hard worker, being born into a family of four girls on a farm in Upshur County she had little choice. She always said, "I was Daddy’s boy because he didn’t have one." Her Dad was a coal miner and was gone most days from sun up until sun down so the farm chores were left to the girls. Ondelea learned hard work from an early age. Even when she left home to raise a family she still kept the hard work mentality. She used to tell about crocheting doilies and selling them for ten cents to buy things for her boys when they were low on money. Ondelea wasn’t afraid to try anything. She held down several jobs in her lifetime. She worked at American Bridge in PA and Hazel Atlas but, the one she was most proud of was when she became a real estate agent. She worked many years selling houses and won many awards for several different companies including: Nutter & Spiro, Heck & Mingyar, and Century 21 to name a few. She took pride in her work and it showed. She overcame a lot by working hard. God has always been an important part of Ondelea’s life. Her faith has helped her through many difficult times. For many years she was a Sunday School teacher at the Oakmound E.C. Church at Rosebud. She loved working with the youth and would make up plays for them to perform. Later on she became one of the founding members of the Jewel City Church in Shinnston, WV serving on the Board of Directors for many years. In her younger years, she was an avid painter and loved to share her work with others. She also enjoyed crocheting, especially house shoes which she also gave away as gifts. She crocheted a beautiful tablecloth for her table and several bedspreads over the years. She loved to share her talents with others and even taught others how to crochet. She was a talented woman in many ways but, especially in her poetry. She wrote such beautiful poems but, rarely shared them. She gave them to her granddaughter, Elaine, on the condition that she not share them with anyone until she was gone. That was one thing the two of them shared was their poetry. It was their little secret. Ondelea loved her family and for years would have them over every Sunday after church for dinner. She would cook for holidays and have a house full of people. It is something everyone will always remember. She did so much for so many that there is no way to list it all. There is not way to fit it in one obituary. Those who knew her will never forget her and have many fond memories of her of their own. She may be gone from this earth but, she will never be forgotten. She will live forever in our thoughts and our hearts. Ondelea is survived by two sisters, Norma Postlethwait of Bridgeport, WV and Patricia "Patty" Wolford of Indianapolis, IN. Four sons and one daughter, Frederick "Freddy" Hamilton and his wife, Helen of Clarksburg, WV, David " Dave" Hamilton and his wife, Tammy of Clarksburg, WV, Richard "Rick" Norris and his wife, Janet of Hurricane, WV, Bobby Norris and his wife, Ruthmary of Talladega, AL and Gayle Boehm of Globe, AZ. Five grandsons and two granddaughters, Scott Hamilton, Rick Norris Jr., Matt Norris, Shayne Norris, Adam Hamilton, Elaine Grippin and Yvette Slusarski and their spouses. Many great nieces and nephews, great grandchildren and a great-great granddaughter. She was preceded in death by her parents, Sherman (November 27, 1978) and Allie (January 16, 2003), her spouses, Tiny (October 9, 1997) and Gale (June 10, 1998), one sister, Gen Shipman (May 29, 2007, one nephew, Ronnie Keener (March 22, 1986) and one grandson, Patrick Hamilton (January 4, 2004).
