Claude Gibbs Obituary

Claude Thurman Gibbs, Sr., 81, of Shinnston, passed away at 2:25pm Tuesday, June 7, 2016 at West Virginia University Hospitals Ruby Memorial. He was born in Robey, West Virginia, November 13, 1934, the son of the late Archie J. and Bessie Lawson Gibbs. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Samuel Gibbs and James Gibbs, one grandson, Joseph E. Bowen, and one great granddaughter, Mackenzie Williams. On August 20, 1955 he married Patricia Drummond Gibbs. He is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Cheryl Bowen and husband David, Mrs. Linda Powers and husband Gerald, Ms. Brenda Bonnell, two sons, Claude Gibbs, Jr., David A. Gibbs, one sister, Sarah Riffle, Weston, eleven grandchildren, Tim, Brian, Shawn Gibbs, Keirston Currence, Tracee Gibbs McGee, Joshua Powers, Kristie Bonnell Savino, Scott Bonnell, Jessica Swiger and David E. Gibbs, Christopher Bowen, and 23 great grandchildren. Claude was a 1953 graduate of Lumberport High School and a former marine reservist. He was employed by Conrad Contractors, and retired from Salerno Brother’s as a mechanic and heavy equipment operator. Claude was an avid bowler, having won many trophies in his younger years and was also an avid coin collector. In recent years he took pride in his yard and vegetable garden. Claude also loved to fish and was a huge Mountaineer fan. Mr. Gibbs was a Christian by faith. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather and was greatly admired by his grandchildren.
