Joseph Heinzman

Joseph L. “Joe” Heinzman, age 90, of Grafton, WV passed away on Thursday, June 12, 2014 at the Mon General Hospital in Morgantown, WV. He was born May 5, 1924 in Grafton, WV a son of the late Milton Blair and Minnie Faye McWilliams Heinzman. Joe is survived by three children: Joseph Alan Heinzman and wife Michelle, David Franklin Heinzman and wife Lenore, and Shelley Kaye Elsey and husband Scott; six grandchildren: Samuel Joseph Heinzman, Desirae Heinzman, David Christopher Heinzman, Cameron Wayne Heinzman, Trevor Shane Heinzman, Shayla Elsey Wood, Seth Elsey, and Shyanne Jewel Elsey; two great-granddaughters: Hali Faith Wood and Lydia Grace Wood; and one sister Margaret Heinzman Llaneza. Also surviving are several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents Joe was preceded in death by his wife Betty Jane Rosier Heinzman and one brother Arthur Trimble. Joe graduated from Grafton High School class of 1943. He went on to serve his country during WWII with the US Air Corp from July 28, 1943 to February 10, 1946, and then the Korean Conflict from October 10, 1950 to September 16, 1951. He retired from WV Pioneer C&P Telephone Company where he was a dedicated installer and lineman for 35 years. He continued his public service as a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, where he served for 65 years in a myriad of leadership positions and also as a volunteer for Veteran’s Affairs. Joe volunteered a countless number of hours in the community, serving with the first Taylor County Emergency Squad which he helped start in 1960, as well as helping with various youth and high school sports programs. Joe was named the 2009 Citizen of the Year for Service by the Exponent Telegram, the 2010 Citizen of the Year by the Grafton Rotary Club, a 2013 Taylor County Schools Hall of Fame Inductee, and a 2013 VFW Rich Holman Award recipient. He was a member of the Good Sheppard United Methodist Church, the VFW Memorial City Post 3081, Taylor County Post #12 American Legion, and Grafton Elks Lodge 308. Joe was also a member of the Taylor County Honor Guard and the Memorial Day Committee. He will be remembered for his outstanding service to his country, state, and especially the people of Taylor County. He cherished spending family time with his children and grandchildren. Joe will truly be missed by all. The family will receive friends at the Donald G. Ford Funeral Home US Route 50 West Grafton, WV, on Sunday, June 15, 2014 from 2 to 8 PM, and on Monday, June 16, 2014 from 10 AM until the funeral hour at 11. Funeral services will be conducted on Monday, June 16, 2014 at 11 AM at the funeral home with Pastor Bert Coffman officiating. Interment will follow in the WV National Cemetery at Pruntytown with Military Graveside Services accorded by the Taylor County Honor Guard. In lieu of flowers, if you wish memorial donations can be made in Joe’s memory to the Taylor County Honor Guard.
