Harding Miller

Harding Selby McClelland Miller, 91, passed away on August 31, 2016. She was born April 18, 1925 to Dr. Robert Wilson Selby and Lena Mae Diller Selby in Middleburg, Va. Both parents were from Northumberland County, as were all four of her grandparents. Dr. and Mrs. Selby soon moved back to Reedville, Va. with his medical practice. After the death of both parents, by age nine, Harding moved in with her aunt and uncle, Addie Belle and Ernest Harding and their four sons, Billy, Diller, Lawson and Ernie at Guarding Point in Balls Neck, Va. She was educated in Northumberland County Public Schools, graduating from Northumberland High School in 1942. She then attended Saint Anne's Prepatory School in Charlottesville, Va. before attending and graduating in 1947 from Randolph Macon Women's College in Lynchburg, Va. With her first husband, Dr. Charles Shintani, she moved to Long Beach, California where she lived for thirty odd years. They had one child, Joyce, who has now lived in Germany for more than thirty years. While in California, she had several jobs, finally retiring from teaching in the Los Angeles Public School System. After retirement, in 1980, she and her second husband, Randolph Service, moved back to her beloved Northern Neck where she was active with Wicomico Episcopal Church, The Rappahannock Free Health Clinic, and The Rappahannock Art League. After Randolph's death, she married Hugh McClelland. With both Randolph and Hugh she traveled extensively. After Hugh's death, she moved to Rappahannock Westminster- Canterbury retirement community in Irvington, Va. In 2010, she married Charles G. Miller, with whom she enjoyed the rest of her life. She is survived by her daughter, Joyce Shintani (Metin) and a host of cousins around the Northern Neck. A memorial service will be held at Wicomico Parish Episcopal Church In Wicomico Church, Va. on Saturday, September 10th at 10:30 a. m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Wicomico Parish Episcopal Church, P. O. Box 79, Wicomico Church, VA 22579 or Rappahannock Westminster-Canterbury Foundation, 132 Lancaster Dr., Irvington, VA 22480.
