Augustus Reed

Irvington, VA.- A. Crenshaw (Crennie) Reed, Jr., 91, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his wife and children, on October14, 2016, at his residence. Born on March 9, 1925, in Norfolk, Virginia, where he resided until moving to the Northern Neck in 2000, Crennie is survived by his loving wife of 66 years, Susan Roberts Reed; his three children, Anne R. Harper, A. Crenshaw Reed III (Missy), and James R. Reed (Michelle); his seven grandchildren, Susan L. Gray (Seth), Elizabeth H. Garrison (David), A. Crenshaw Reed IV (Emily), Cullen W. Reed (Abby), Lea B. Lemon (Trevor), Caroline R. Vipperman (Joseph), and Anna W. Reed; and his four great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his parents, A. Crenshaw and Bertha F. Reed, and his son-in-law, John P. Harper, Jr. Educated in Norfolk, he attended Walter H. Taylor School, Norfolk Academy, and graduated from Maury High School in 1942. He began his college career at the Norfolk Division of William and Mary/VPI, now Old Dominion University, where he was a member and officer of Phi Sigma Service Fraternity. In 1943, he interrupted his college career to enlist in the Army Air Corps, where he was trained as a bomber pilot and a glider pilot at the rank of 2nd Lieutenant. Following his honorable discharge from active duty and his commissioning as a 1st LT in the United States Air Force Reserves, he enrolled in the Industrial Engineering Program at Virginia Polytechnic Institute, Blacksburg, VA, where he played center on the basketball team from 1945 to 1948, serving as Captain his Senior year; was a member of Omicron Delta Kappa Honorary Society, the VPI German Club and Tau Beta Pi Honorary Engineering Fraternity. Following his graduation, Crennie returned to Norfolk, where he was employed first by Door Engineering Corporation and then by Tidewater Construction Corporation, from which he retired as a Vice President. Notable among the TCC projects during his career were the Hampton Roads Bridge Tunnel and the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel, along with many bridges that span waterways up and down the East Coast. Following the completion of the CBBT, he was among those from TCC that were inducted into The Moles, a prestigious fraternal organization of the heavy construction industry. Crennie spent a lifetime in service to the religious, professional, social and civic organizations to which he belonged. He served on the Vestry of the Church of the Good Shepherd, Norfolk, multiple times, including terms as both Junior and Senior Warden. He made his Cursillo in the Diocese of Southern Virginia and served as Rector of Cursillo 69 in 1993. After joining Wicomico Parish Church, he served on the Vestry and as Senior Warden. He was a member and former Vice President of the Engineers Club of Hampton Roads. He was a member and served on the Board of the Society of Military Engineers. He was a member and Past-President of the Tidewater Chapter of the Virginia Tech Alumni Association. He served on the Virginia Tech Alumni Board. He was a member and Past-President of the Norfolk German Club and the Norfolk Yacht and Country Club. He was a 68-year member of American Legion Post 35. Crennie was an avid tennis player from his earliest years, when his doubles partner was his father, “Ike.” He also enjoyed golf, fishing and family vacations at ‘The Shack’ in Virginia Beach, the Roberts Cottage on Mosquito Point, and at Camp Greenbrier House Party in Alderson, West Virginia. He played the banjo-mandolin and loved leading family and friends in making music together. First and foremost, Crennie was a devoted follower of his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. His unswerving honor and devotion to his family and friends flowed from his deep and abiding faith. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, November 5, 2016, at 11:00 a.m., at Wicomico Parish Church, 5191 Jessie Ball DuPont Memorial Hwy., Wicomico Church, VA, 22579. Burial will be private.
