Flip Matthews Wilbur Morrison “Flip” Matthews, 83, Gate City, VA passed away, Saturday, July 16, 2016. Flip was born in Franklin County, VA on February 16, 1933. He was the son of the late Willy James and Cora McBride Matthews. He retired as Labor Supervisor of Scott County, VA. In addition to his parents, his daughter, Linda Matthews Robertson; brothers, Thomas Matthews, Nelson Matthews, and Lee Matthews; sisters, Gladys Frazier, Ruth Hodges; and nephews, Morton Hodges, Jr. and Donald Terry Hodges preceded him in death. His survivors include his wife of 48 years, Linda Minton Matthews, Gate City, VA; daughters, Lora Matthews, Gate City, VA and Kathy Rigney and husband, Lonnie, Ferrum, VA; grandsons, Brian Hodges, Cliff Rigney and wife, Shannon, and Kenny Robertson and wife, Cindy; 5 great grandchildren; sisters, Rachel Mattox and Hazel Turner; along with several nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends from 1:00 – 3:00 p.m., Monday, July 18, 2016 at the Gate City Funeral Home. Funeral services will be conducted at 3:00 p.m. in the Gene Falin Memorial Chapel of the funeral home with the Rev. Paul Blessing officiating. Burial will follow the service at the Francisco Cemetery in the Big Moccasin community of Nickelsville, VA with Military Rites conducted by the American Legion Hammond Post #3, Kingsport, TN and Post #265, Gate City, VA. Family and friends will serve as pallbearers. An online guest register is available for the Matthews family at www.gatecityfunerals.com.
