He was preceded in death by his parents, James Hill and Lenora Ramsey Motley, and sisters, Margaret Adams and Delma White. He is survived by his brother, Hartwell Motley and children, Sarah Motley of Salem, VA; Susan Furry (Fr. Michael) of Salem; James Thomas Motley (Louise), Joseph Motley (Robin), and Timothy Motley (Carol) all of the Chatham area. His grandchildren are Meredith Ward, Adam Motley, Hilton Motley, Elizabeth Hankins, Jennifer Motley, Melissa Waller, Anna Furry, Catherine Furry, Mitchell Motley, Luke Furry, and Julie Motley. Great-grand children are Grayson and Drake Ward, Alaina Waller, and Emerson Motley. He also leaves behind a multitude of nieces and nephews.
He graduated from Chatham High School and soon after joined the Merchant Marines in World War II. Due to devoted friend and employee, Joe Lewis Hodnett, he was able to continue his education at Milligan College and graduated from Lynchburg College in 1959. He had a 30 year career as a History teacher in Pittsylvania County Schools.
From his youth he was passionate about conservation, stewardship, and his cows. At sixteen years old, he started Motley Dairy, selling milk and butter on the school bus route. The dairy has developed to provide livelihood for his three sons and his three grandsons. One of his greatest joys was in providing meaningful work for people and he served on several agricultural boards. His love of history and genealogy also led to service as past president of the Pittsylvania County Historical Society. He preserved the old by building the new with numerous house building projects, one of the last being, converting the old Sheva Church building into the home that he and Judith shared for the last 12 years. He was a long standing member of Sheva Church of Christ, serving as an Elder and Sunday School teacher for many years. His Christian faith was exhibited through his hospitality and stewardship of what was entrusted to him. The treasure that he counted as his greatest was a legacy of a family that loves the Lord.
Funeral services will be conducted at Sheva Church of Christ on Tuesday, March 19, 2013 at 11:00 AM with the Ministers Louis Hall, Chris Stanley and Larry Owen officiating. Burial will be at Sheva Church of Christ Cemetery. The family will receive friends at Sheva Church of Christ on Monday, March 18, 2013 from 6:30 PM till 8:30 PM and at other times will be at the residence. Scott Funeral Home in Chatham is respectfully serving the Motley family.
