Ellender Chase

Ellender Stribling Chase, 97, died peacefully Sunday afternoon, July 24, 2016. There will be a graveside service at 9:00 am on Wednesday, July 27th at Oakwood Cemetery, followed by a memorial service at 10:00 am at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church with the Rev. Sharron Cox officiating. Visitation will be at 5:30 pm on Tuesday, July 26th at the home of Penny and Tom Chase. Ellender Chase was born on June 20, 1919 in Waco, Texas to Davis Gurley Stribling and Manon Yantis Stribling. A descendant of the Earle, Harrison, and Gurley pioneer families of Waco, she attended Waco public schools and Mary Baldwin Women’s College and graduated from The University of Texas, where she was a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority. A charter member of the Junior League of Waco, Mrs. Chase was active in the Castle Heights Historic District, Woman’s Club, Daughters of the Republic of Texas, and National Society of the Colonial Dames of America. She served as President of the Waco McLennan County Bar Auxiliary and played an integral role in the preservation and restoration of the historic Fort House in Waco. She was a member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church and was active in her Education for Ministry group. She was preceded in death by George Chase, her husband of 71 years. She is survived by her brother Thomas Stribling and wife Jo, her children: Tom Chase and wife Penny; Davis Chase; and Jim Chase and wife Mary Lacy. She is also survived by her four grandchildren: George Chase and wife, Cara; Felicia Goodman and husband, Somers; Jamey Chase and wife, Katie; and Grace Chase. She had four great-grandchildren: Claire Chase, Ellie Chase, Helen Goodman, and Daisy Goodman. The family offers special thanks to the caregivers at Lake Ridge Healthy Living for their compassion and dedication. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, Cooper Foundation, Waco Foundation, or a charity of choice.
