Newman Edwin Shorter, of Jewett, passed away peacefully on Wednesday morning, September 7, 2016, at St. Catherine Center in Waco at the age of 86. Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m., Saturday, September 10, 2016 at Blair-Stubbs Chapel in Mexia with Rev. Ray Grissett and Rev. Bill Sutton officiating. Interment will follow in the Prairie Hill Cemetery. Brian Maples, Shane Shorter, Andrew White, Gary Harriman, Jeff Harriman and Dan Maples will serve as pallbearers. Visitation with the family will be 6-8 p.m., Friday, at Blair-Stubbs Funeral Home. Newman was born in Frosa, Texas on October 15, 1929 to Floyd Thomas and Ora Odell Shorter. He served in the United States Marine Corp from December 1951 to December 1953. He worked for Harvest Queen Grain Service, General Dynamics in Fort Worth and the Mexia State School before returning to cattle ranching in 1973, which he continued until his death. Raising cattle and spending time with his grandchildren were his favorite pastimes. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Jewett. He was preceded in death by his parents. Newman is survived by his loving wife of 48 years, Margaret Shorter of Jewett; children, Carolyn Maples and husband, Dan of Ft. Worth and Randy Shorter and wife, Linda of Axtell; four grandchildren, Brian and Amy Maples, Shane Shorter and wife, Katie and Miranda White and husband, Andrew; sisters, Margie Chandler-Sadler of Ft. Worth and Reva Harriman of Groesbeck.
