Mr. Don Smirl, loving father, grandfather, and great-grandfather 67, of Corsicana passed away Wednesday, August 31, 2016 at Navarro Regional Hospital. Don was born January 29, 1949 in Dallas, TX to Leon and Eddie (Dennis) Smirl. Don proudly served his country in the United States Marines, serving during the Vietnam War and later served as the Post Commander of the Corsicana VFW. After serving his country Don graduated from Texas A&M University – Commerce. Upon graduating Don began teaching at Eastfield Community College in Mesquite, Texas. Through the years he taught Biology, Microbiology, Anatomy and Physiology, Botany, and Geology. After leaving his teaching career Don started a new chapter in life as a Health and Safety Officer for the City of Mesquite and later for Navarro County and the City of Corsicana. Don was an avid hunter and fisherman and mentored numerous children and introduced them to his love of the outdoors. Don is survived by his son, Cody Smirl and wife Julie of Liberty Hill, TX; daughters, Morgan Smirl of Corsicana, TX, Melissa Huffman of Austin, TX, and Denise Smirl of Florida; granddaughters Hannah Smirl of Liberty Hill, TX, Emily Smirl of Liberty Hill, TX, Drea Brady of Corsicana, TX; grandsons, Jeromy Massey of Nebraska ,Travis Huffman of Texas ; great grandson, Trace Williams of Cedar Park, TX, Zane Ward of Cedar Park, TX; great granddaughter, Braelynn Huffman of Cedar Park, TX,; mother of his children Charlotte Williams of Cedar Park, TX and Julie Smirl of Grapeland, TX and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. He is preceded in death by his parents, a brother Moe Smirl, sisters Oleta and Alice. A time of family and friends visitation will be held from 6:00 pm-8:00 pm Friday, September 9, 2016 at Corley Funeral Home.
