Gerald Klinefelter Obituary

Gerald Richard Klinefelter, lovingly known as "Gerry", "Teacher", "Preacher","Friend", "Grandpa", and "Dad" was born on August 22, 1921 to Ivah Mae and Harley Harrison Klinefelter in Caledonia, Ohio. He departed this earthly life on May 5, 2016. He was preceded in death by his wife, Gladys Brown Klinefelter, his parents, brother Emerson Klinefelter, his Aunt Clara Klinefelter who was like a sister, and son-in-law John Hess. He is survived by his four children and spouses, Larry and Jayne Klinefelter, Paris, KY; Dan Klinefelter, Salida, CO/Berea, KY; Nancy Hess, Sevierville,TN; and Connie and Winston Dickey, Luttrell, TN. Grandpa K was blessed with seven grandchildren; Aaron and Sarah Klinefelter, Jeremy and Shana Klinefelter, Heidi and Neal Smits, John and Michelle Hess, Justin and Danielle Hess, Ben and Ashley Hess, and Martin Dickey. Ten great-grandchildren brought added blessings to his life; Sierra and Jacob Hess, Cloey, Timothy, and Elizabeth Klinefelter, Jonah and Silas Klinefelter, Katelynn, Makenzie, and Jonathan Smits. He will be greatly missed; however, his family rejoices over his homecoming and the beautiful life he lived for Jesus. Early in life he gave his heart to Jesus and earnestly tried to discern and follow the will of his Heavenly Father. At fifteen years old he felt called to serve at Red Bird Mission in Kentucky. At Taylor University he met the love his life, Gladdy who had a similar dream for serving the Lord. He served five years as a pastor in Ohio and then followed his calling and gave thirty-two years of service to Red Bird Mission. Twenty-five years were on Greasy Creek in Leslie County where he taught school and preached. After retirement from teaching, he pastored another Red Bird church at Mill Creek in Clay County, KY. Gerry and Gladdy retired in Berea, KY where he loved getting to know his new neighbors and church friends, staying in touch with his old friends, writing many letters, diaries, articles for the Richmond Register, gardening, participating in the Easter Drama, "Lord Is It I?" and much daily time in mediation and prayer for others. One of his favorite scriptures: "Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness." Isaiah 41:10 King James Version (KJV) Many people were blessed by his love, inspired by his happiness, and motivated by his encouragement. An example is a closing of his 1963 Christmas letter: "We wish for you the solid comfort of old friends and the adventure of making new friends. We wish for you the heart-warming realization that golden moments bombard us. We wish for you the personal knowledge of the Savior whose birthday we observe. We pray that this knowledge of Christ may ever enlarge into an eternal friendship. We pray that service, love, brotherliness to all may be the object of our living. And as Tiny Tim said, "God bless us everyone."" He would tell you to love your neighbor as yourself and love the Lord your God with all your heart and soul. He lived a extraordinary life. Funeral services will be Monday, May 9th, 2016 at 3:30 pm at Berea United Methodist Church with Aaron Klinefelter and Rev. Phillip Bradley officiating. Visitation will be 12:30 until 2:30 Monday at Davis & Powell Funeral Home. Burial will be Wednesday, May 11th in the Salem United Methodist Church Cemetery in Marion, Ohio. Expression of sympathy may be made to Red Bird Mission, 70 Queendale Court, Beverly, KY 40913-9607 www.davisandpowellfuneralhome.com
