Vernon Huggins Obituary

Vernon T. “Vernie” Huggins, 64, husband of Debbie Polito Huggins, died Thursday, September 22, 2016, at Palmetto Health Tuomey. Born June 2, 1952, in Sumter, he was a son of Ann Wilkie Huggins and the late Richard Huggins. He was a retired truck driver and co-owner of Huggins Brothers Trucking. He attended Dalzell United Methodist Church and was an avid fisherman, Clemson Tiger fan, and NASCAR fan. Survivors include his wife of 36 years; mother of Sumter; three children, Sherry Jacks (Jamie) of Sumter, Ashleigh Stark (Harry) of Blythewood, and Vernon Thomas “T.J.” Huggins, Jr. of Irmo; six grandchildren, Chad Phillips, Matt Phillips, Michael Smith, Jada David, Hailey David, and Nathan Stark; a brother, Richard Huggins, Jr. (Andra); his beloved dog, Harley; and many friends. A memorial service will be held at 3 P.M. Sunday in the Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home chapel with the Rev. Stephen Sanderson officiating. The family will receive friends from 2 to 3 P.M. Sunday at Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home and other times at the home, 3430 Tucker St., Dalzell and also at the home of his mother, 1546 Florence Hwy. Sumter. Memorials may be made to the American Diabetes Association, 2711 Middleburg Dr., Kittrell Center, Suite 110, Columbia, SC 29204 or to a charity of one’s choice. Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home and Crematorium of Sumter is in charge of the arrangements.
