Irene Jane “Renee” Schmidt, 74, wife of Richard J. “Smitty” Schmidt, died Friday, July 29, 2016 at Palmetto Health-Richland in Columbia. Born in Albany, NY, she was the daughter of the late Walter Edward Woods and the late Marguerite Woods. Mrs. Schmidt was a member of Westside Baptist Church. She worked as a Registered Nurse for more than 50 years. Survivors include her husband of Sumter; one son, Andrew Woods Hansel (Kelly); her first husband, James P. Nuttle; four step-children, Anthony Schmidt (Billie), Cheryl Schmidt, Richard Nelson, and Angela Timmons (Eugene); and many step-grandchildren. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a husband, Lawrence Wayne Hansel, and a step-son, Paul Schmidt. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday in the Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Aaron Reed officiating. A private burial will be held at a later date. The family will receive friend from 1 to 2 p.m. Tuesday at Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home and other time at the home, 2640 Hodge St. Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home and Crematorium of Sumter is in charge of the arrangements.
