Charles B. Dess Obituary

Charles B. Dess, 84, of Neshannock Township, passed away July 26, 2016 at UPMC Jameson. He was born on April 13, 1932 in New Castle, a son of the late Joseph and Mary (Duff) Dess. He was married to Angie (Cioppa) Dess for 55 years. She survives in New Castle.


Chuck was of the Catholic faith and belonged to St. Camillus Parish. He was employed at Youngstown Osteopathic Hospital as a Director of Nuclear Medicine and retired after 35 years of service. He was the Shenango Athletic Director from 2000 to 2003 and served on the Neshannock School Board for 10 years.


He graduated in 1949 from Shenango High School, lettering in baseball and basketball. He was very knowledgeable about sports. He had an invitation to try out for the Chicago White Sox, but before going he was drafted into the Army Paratroopers where he played baseball and football for the 11th Airborne at Fort Campbell, KY for two years. After the service, he attended Carnegie College in Cleveland, earning a degree in Medical Technology.


Chuck will be remembered for being a PIAA official in football, baseball, basketball, softball, and volleyball for 45 years in two different states. He was inducted into the Lawrence County Historical Society Sports Hall of Fame on August 25, 2010. He loved all sports, gardening, and enjoyed watching and was very proud of his grandsons in all their activities.


In addition to his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Lisa (Jeff) Rich of New Castle; two sons, Charles II of New Castle and Joseph of North Canton, OH; two grandsons, Ryan Rich and Zachary Rich; and a brother, William; all of New Castle. He was preceded in death by his brothers, George and Robert Dess.


Visitation will be held Friday from 4:00pm to 7:00pm at the Ed and Don DeCarbo Funeral Home and Crematory 3000 Wilmington Rd. Blessing services will be conducted Saturday at 10:30am at the funeral home, conducted by Father William Siple. The New Castle Area Honor Guard will conduct military rites at the funeral home.


Entombment will take place at Parkside Mausoleum.
