Samuel M. Cummings

Samuel M. Cummings Sr. KANE Samuel M. Cummings Sr., 76, of 155 Greeves Street, passed away Saturday (June 25,2016) at his home after an illness of the past several months. Born October 5, 1939, in Pittsburgh, he was the son of the late Wilson G. and Catherine Codish Cummings. On August 17, 1963, in Tarentum, he married Marian Cecchini who survives. Sam was a graduate of Kane High School, class of 1957; IUP; and the Cincinnati College of Mortuary Science. For three years he was a science teacher in the Southwest Butler School District after which he returned to Kane upon the untimely death of his father in 1965. He was a funeral director and owner of the Cummings Funeral Home, Inc. and later was joined by his son, Sam Jr. Sam was a member and past president of the Pennsylvania Funeral Directors; a longtime member and secretary/treasurer of the Warren, McKean, Elk County Funeral Directors; and a member of the National Funeral Directors. He also served as Chief Deputy Coroner of McKean County for many years. Sam belonged to the Elks Club and bowled in league for many years. He was a member of the Kane Country Club where he participated in men’s league. He also was a member of the K Club (formerly Kiwanis); the K of C Council #715 and St. Callistus Church. He was a true outdoorsman and enjoyed hunting and fishing with his friends. He also enjoyed traveling domestically and abroad and was always ready to take the motor home on a trip. Tailgating at Penn State was always on the schedule. Surviving, in addition to his wife Marian Cummings, are three children, Kristin Cummings of Seattle, WA, Sam Cummings Jr. of Kane; and Stacey (Aaron) Haney of Brookville; three grandchildren, Christopher Cummings, Camryn Cummings and Natalie Haney; his former daughter-in-law, Barbie Paup Cummings of Kane; and several good friends who were just like family. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Merry Kay, who died in an automobile accident in 1965. Friends will be received on Thursday from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Cummings Funeral Home, Inc. where a vigil service will follow at 8:00 p.m. and an Elks service at 8:30 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. Friday at St. Callistus Catholic Church with the Rev. Philip Pinczewski, pastor, and the Rev. Charles Schmitt, retired, co-officiating. Burial will be in St. Callistus Cemetery. Memorial donations can be made to a charity of choice.
