Keith Horn

Keith Donald Horn, of 52 Birch Street passed away at the Lutheran Home of Kane, August 11, 2016. Keith was a respected business owner of Keith Horn, Inc. Horn was the first consulting forester in the state to receive certification from the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC). In 2003, the Society of American Foresters recognized Horn with its Presidential Field Forester Award for his “uncommon talent and innovative methods to achieve a record of excellence in the application of forest management.” He has trained and mentored dozens of young foresters in the art of the Allegheny silviculture. Horn is also an artist of forestry. He painted and sketched the woods that he worked in and shared this artwork with colleagues and clients. He has created and donated his artwork for numerous fundraising auctions to benefit many different causes. Horn served as a director of the Hamlin Bank and Trust, was a board member of the Kane Community Hospital, the Williamsport Area Community College, and was an initial founder of the Kane Shade Tree Commission. Keith Horn had a bachelor of science in Forestry from Penn State University. He received a full scholarship to play football at Penn State where he lettered three out of his four years. Keith stayed on as the freshman coach and had the opportunity to work with Coach Paterno for a year. After which Keith completed a two-year tour of Europe in the Air Force as a football coach/player nearly changing his professional direction to coaching football. Horn helped create a forestry scholarship at Penn State, was an active member in the Letterman’s Club, and a contributor to Penn State’s athletics. He gave generously of his time and money to a variety of other community charities. Surviving are daughters Kimberly Horn and Christine Horn of Kane, PA; son Keith Jr. (Carla) of Corning, NY. He also leaves grandchildren, Austin (Louise) Ewing of Austin, TX, Nicole Ewing of Kane, and Madeline and Christine Horn of Corning, NY. He was preceded in death by his wife Phyllis and son Eric. There will be a private memorial service held on Bois Blanc Island, MI where he will be buried with his family. Contributions can be made in honor of Keith D. Horn for Residents Care at the Lutheran Home. A special thank-you to the nurses who cared and were always there to help. Local arrangements are under the direction of the Cummings Funeral Home, Inc.
