Mary Ann Fessler Obituary

Mary Ann Roberts Fessler, age 81, of Erie, passed away peacefully, at her home, on Wednesday, October 15, 2014. She was born on November 26, 1932, in Erie, Pa., a daughter of the late Dr. R. John and Elizabeth Melaven Roberts. Mary Ann was a 1950 graduate of Mercyhurst Seminary and a 1954 graduate of Marymount College, in Tarrytown, New York. She was a member of St. Julia Church and Blessed Trinity Church in St. Petersburg, Fla. She was a five-time E.D.W.G.A. golf champion, and a 12-time E.D.W.G.A. Senior golf champion. She has also won multiple club championships at the Kahkwa Club, Lake Shore, and Erie Golf Club, and was a former member of the Isla Del Sol C.C. in St. Petersburg, Fla. She had seven holes-in-one in her career. Mary Ann had been honored to play at Augusta National. She is a member of the Erie Chapter of the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame and the E.D.G.A. Hall of Fame. While she has many accomplishments, her most cherished moments were her time spent with her family at the "Cottage." In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, Richard Roberts. She is survived by her husband of 60 years, Donald F. Fessler; her ten children, Tom (Jill) Fessler of Erie, Kathy (Matt) Hersch of Erie, Bill (Mary Beth) Fessler of New Canaan, Conn., John (Amy) Fessler, Don Jr. (Erin) Fessler, Susie (Jerry) Dill, Annie (Marty) Kaverman, Betsy (Steve) Squeglia, Patty (James) Kloecker, and Jim (Alison) Fessler, all of Erie; 41 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; two brothers, Dr. John Roberts and Dr. James (Becky) Roberts; and many nieces and nephews. Friends may call at the Russell C. Schmidt & Son Funeral Home, Inc., 5000 Wattsburg Rd., Erie, PA 16504, on Friday from 1 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 9 p.m., and are invited to a Funeral Mass on Saturday at 10:00 a.m., at St. Jude the Apostle Catholic Church, with Msgr. Henry Kriegel celebrant. Burial will follow at Gate of Heaven Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Roman Catholic Diocese of Erie, 429 East Grandview Blvd., Erie, PA 16504.
