Robert Altemose Obituary

Robert Wayne Altemose Sr., 91, of Brodheadsville, passed away on Thursday, September 8 in the Pocono Health Systems Hospice House, East Stroudsburg. He was a lifelong supporter of his church and community. He was the husband of the late Dolores (Warnken) Altemose. Born in Brodheadsville, he was a son of the late Lloyd S. and Pearl (Warner) Altemose and grandson of Rogers Wayne Altemose and Emma Jane Shupp Altemose. He was the third generation of R. W. Altemose & Son in Brodheadsville, established by the original R.W.-Rogers Wayne and Emma Jane in 1901. After his wife Dolores passed away, he continued the family tradition of service to his community until his 91st year of life. While in Chestnuthill High School, young Robert daily ran down the long hill at noon to work in the store to give his parents the opportunity for lunch. A graduate of the Wharton School, Robert played first chair trumpet in the University of Pennsylvania marching band. During World War II, he was called from Penn by the United States Navy and sent to Harvard Business School for special training. Robert then shipped out to serve on an aircraft carrier in the South Pacific. It was his pleasure to serve, and he enjoyed the spirit and camaraderie aboard ship. Upon graduation, Robert graciously declined offers in Philadelphia, and chose to return to his community. Mr. Altemose served on the Zion United Lutheran Church Council and the Buena Vista Cemetery board where he was a past president. He belonged to Barger Lodge #325 Free and Accepted Masons in Bartonsville and earned his fifty-year membership in 2011. He was proud of the creation of the Western Pocono Community Library and the good work of Carol Kern. He is survived by a daughter; a son, Robert W. Altemose Jr. of Brodheadsville; a granddaughter, Lauren Altemose in MD and his companion of fifteen years, Virginia Swan. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM on Thursday, September 15 from Zion United Lutheran Church in Brodheadsville, with Rev. Ann Melot officiating. Burial will be in Buena Vista Cemetery, Brodheadsville. There will be a viewing on Wednesday, September 14 from 6:00 to 9:00 PM from the Kresge Funeral Home, 1763 Route 209 Brodheadsville and on Thursday from 10:00 AM until the time of the service from the church. www.kresgefuneralhome.com
