Stanley Goldman Obituary

Stanley L. Goldman passed away on Sunday June 12, 2016 at Centre Crest. He was born in Bellefonte on February 26, 1932, the only child of Flora Cyperstein Goldman and Bernard Goldman. He graduated from Bellefonte High School in 1950 and then earned his B.S. degree in education at Lock Haven University. He studied at Penn State and became the first special education teacher in Centre County. This career choice led him to a 48-year involvement with Skills Inc. and a term as chairman of the board. During his school tenure he was a Bald Eagle Area assistant wrestling coach from 1957 -1962. As well as coaching, Stan became a PIAA official. He also founded and coached the Bellefonte YMCA wrestling program. The YMCA teams won three Pennsylvania State YMCA titles. Long active in the community where he operated the family business, the National Store until 1995. He retired from the clothing business to operate the National Sportswear Company until 1999. In 2001 he was elected to the officer of mayor, a position he held for eleven years. He was most proud of the growth of the Bellefonte Police Department and often referred to them as his boys. Stan was very civic minded and always felt that one has to give back to his community. He served on many boards including the Bellefonte Industrial Development Authority, Historic Bellefonte Inc., the Bellefonte Zoning Hearing Board and the Bellefonte Borough Authority. He is an honorary life member of the Chamber of Commerce, founding treasurer of the Bellefonte Art Museum for Centre County, and a charter member of the Centre County Community Foundation. He held executive positions in the Bellefonte Kiwanis Club, the Bellefonte Jaycees, the Chamber of Commerce and the Centre County Mental Health and Retardation board, and the Centre County United Way. He was selected as a member of the National Lee Sports executive board. He is survived by his wife, Dona Musser Goldman and his two children, Karen Ingram and Jay Goldman, residents of Bellefonte. Four grandchildren, Nathan Goldman of State College, Isaac Goldman of Bellefonte, Christopher Ingram of Bellefonte, Benjamin Ingram (Ashley) of Fayetteville, Arkansas. Stan was an avid Penn State football and wrestling fan. He enjoyed playing golf at the Nittany Country Club until his health no longer made it possible. One of his favorite activities was his Thursday night poker group. His love of his community was only surpassed by his love of his family. Private services will be held at the convenience of the family.
