Juanita F. Ignowski died September 5, 2016, in Hood River, OR. She was born in Heppner, OR on November 24, 1922 to William Frederick and Dellie (Wright) Matlock. Her early childhood was spent in Lexington until the family moved to The Dalles, OR in 1933. She attended the old Court Street School and well as Whitter Jr. High before attending The Dalles High School. She played both baseball and basketball. Due to an accident at school, she missed much of the school year. She returned to high school and enrolled in St Mary’s Academy and finished her senior year. Her first job after school was dispatching for the Dalles Taxi Co. She did a lot of babysitting for children whose parents worked in the fruit industry during the summer. During the end of the summer of 1941, she worked in the kitchen on farms during wheat harvest. It was on one of these farms in the Madras area that she met her future husband, Michael V. Ignowski. Later that year he moved to The Dalles where they met again. They were married on Sunday, December 14, 1941. They were married for 66 years until his death. Four months after they were married, Michael left for the Army. She accompanied him on the bus to Portland, OR where he left by train to Oakland CA. then by ship to Hawaii for training. She stayed in Portland with an Aunt and began working as a waitress for the Cottage Inn on Sandy Blvd. Later she worked for Chase Bag Co. A year later she moved back to The Dalles and lived with her parents while she worked as a waitress for the Commodore Cafe. Over the years she continued to work as a waitress for various businesses including 23 years at Johnny’s Café. She truly loved being a waitress. Much of her working life was spent at Stadelman Fruit. She retired as a Floor Lady. After retiring she continued working at Johnny’s café for many years. She belonged to the First Christian Church and was a member of the Eagles Lodge. She enjoyed trailer camping, family reunions, square dancing, traveling back to Wisconsin to visiting her husband’s numerous relatives. Throughout her life, she loved to crochet and knit. She donated most of her work. She was preceded in death by her husband, Michael V. Ignowski; son Patrick Ignowski, and two sisters, Carol Wasson and Betty Wilson.
