Richard “Dick” Smail, 82 Richard “Dick” Smail passed away on Tuesday, October 11, 2016 at the age of 82. Born in Ashland, Dick was a resident there most of his life. Dick was well known in the Ashland community, especially amongst those who played at the game of golf in Ashland as well as Galion, Ohio. He won several golf championships, and more recently was sought after and highly regarded as both golf instructor and mentor. Dick graduated from Ohio University in 1956, and played on its golf team, and was inducted into the universities Athlete Hall of Fame in 1988. Further he was inducted into the Ashland County Sports Hall of Fame in 2004. Dick served his country in the United States Army Reserve as an officer rising the rank of Captain. Most of his business career was involved in the graphic arts industry, primarily as a salesman selling commercial printing. Dick is survived by a younger brother, David Smail, who lives in Staunton, Virginia. A memorial service to celebrate Dick’s life is planned for Sunday, November 13, 2016 at 4:00 p.m. in the Ashland Grace Brethren Church, 1144 West Main Street, Ashland, Ohio 44805 With Pastor Dan Allan officiating. A reception will follow the service.
