Dan Angel

Mr. Dan Weldon Angel, age 81 of Toccoa, Georgia and formerly from Franklin, North Carolina passed away Monday, June 27, 2016 at his residence. A son of the late Zebulon Grady and Lucille McCollum Angel, he was born October 1, 1934 in Franklin, North Carolina. Dan worked for Standard Knitting Mills, the Savannah River Plant, Toccoa Police Department, Stephens County Sheriff’s Department, Clarke County Sheriff’s Department, GBI and the Georgia Department of Corrections. He paid his college tuition by officiating football and basketball, both high school and college, by taking wedding photos and being the photographer for the Western Carolina College (then Cullowee) Yearbook. Dan served in the U.S. Marine Corps and Vince Dooley was his company commander during boot camp. He loved golf and played with the golf team at Parris Island and caddied at the Highlander Country Club. While officiating late in life, he met Bear Bryant and they became friends. He was in the Air Force Reserve and started the Marine Corp League and Toys for Tots Drive in Toccoa. He coached little league baseball, was Scout Master of Boy Scout Troup 77 in Toccoa and he and his wife Sandra taught 5th and 6th Grade Sunday School Class at the First United Methodist Church in Toccoa where he was a member. In addition, he was founder of the Georgia State Clogging Festival that was held in Stephens County and America’s Clogging Hall of Fame that took place until last year at Maggie Valley, North Carolina. He was later inducted into the Hall of Fame. He also wrote “Lest We Forget” column in the “Double Joe Times” clogging newsletter for several years. Dan belonged to the Yaraab Shrine Temple in Atlanta and the Masonic Lodge in Toccoa. Survivors include his wife of the home of 51 years, Sandra Babb Angel; daughter, Melanie Lynn Angel of the home; brother, Richard Angel of Walland, Tennessee. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Jeffery Scott Angel of Stone Mountain and formerly of Toccoa, by one brother, Jack Angel of Franklin, North Carolina and by two sisters, Mary Dance of Knoxville, Tennessee and Ruth Angel of Gastonia, North Carolina. Memorial service will be Thursday, June 30, 2016, 11 O’clock AM at the First United Methodist Church with The Reverend Dr. John Brown and The Reverend Jerrell Beatty officiating. The Marine Corp League of Toccoa will serve as Honorary Escort. The family will receive friends at the Acree-Davis Funeral Home on Wednesday, 3 PM to 5 PM and 7 PM until 9 PM. Graveside service will be at 3 PM, Thursday, at Woodlawn Cemetery with Military Honors conducted by the VFW Post 7339 and the American Legion Post 108. Flowers are to be omitted. Memorials may be made to the First United Methodist Church, 333 E. Tugalo Street, Toccoa, Georgia 30577 or the church of your choice in memory of Mr. Dan Weldon Angel. Macon Funeral Home is in charge of the local arrangements.
