Katy Hooper Brevard, North Carolina Obituary

Katy Hooper

KATY WYNNE HOOPER HOOPER (1933 – 2016) BREVARD, NC Katy H. Hooper entered this world at Tuckasegee, N. C. on October 15, 1933 into the loving arms of her midwife grandmother, Mary Jane Hooper. She departed this world and entered the gates of heaven on September 9, 2016 into the loving arms of her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Katy died peacefully in Asheville following a fall at her home from a stroke, and resultant traumatic head injury, on August 25, 2016. Her death is a tremendous loss and shock to all. She continued to independently run her family’s various business interests and to love and be vibrantly involved in the lives of her family, friends and community until her accident. She moved to Brevard in 1951 where she met her life long love and partner, her husband of 59+ years, Thomas Logan Hooper, Sr., who preceded her in death. Their love and marriage yielded their beloved children, Marie Hooper Baldridge (Tom) and Thomas Logan Hooper, Jr. She is also survived by her three precious granddaughters Elizabeth Baldridge, and Ashley and Sarah Hooper. Katy was the daughter of Ayscue and Gladys Denton Hooper of Tuckasegee, both of whom preceded her in death. She is survived by one sister, Mary Jo H. Cobb of Tuckasegee, and two brothers, Denton T. Hooper (Alba) of Los Angeles, California and Ben A. Hooper (Minnie) of New Smyrna Beach, Florida. She took courses at Western Carolina Teacher’s College and played the French Horn in the Marching Band while completing Cullowhee High School in 1951. Following her move to Brevard, she first worked for Olin Corporation (Ecusta), before her employment with E. I. DuPont. She was one of the first people to be hired by DuPont and held several positions before being promoted to Executive Secretary to the Plant Manager. She loved her job, but most of all the hundreds of employees, whom she individually chose to know by name. She retired from DuPont after nearly thirty years to care for her beloved mother-in-law. Her beloved in laws, W. G. and Eva P. Hooper also preceded her in death. She marveled at God’s creation and loved gardening and walking her farmlands to watch the corn growth and to hike the mountains with her beloved granddaughters. Katy and her beloved dog, Missy, enjoyed her yard of beautiful flowers and plants and the Hummingbirds that visited her daily. Katy’s lifelong love of music knew no bounds. She learned to play the piano as a very young child and served as her church’s organist for nearly sixty years before arthritis made playing difficult. She was an avid consumer of all performing arts in Brevard including among others, Brevard College performances, the Music Center, and Little Theater. Her children cannot remember a time when they did not attend these performances with her. She continued to love learning new information until her accident and was an avid reader, having read all the books in her elementary school by the fifth grade. Following retirement, she continued to study and acquire new certifications, licenses, etc. such as her real estate license. Katy’s affiliation with various professional, businesses, civic, community and social organizations are too numerous to mention. She however had love for the mission of Pisgah Chapter #195 of the Order of Eastern Star, where she was a 50 + year member. Funeral services will be held at Mt. Moriah Calvart Baptist Church at 2:00 PM on Tuesday, September 13. Visitation will be on Monday evening, September 12 from 6 to 8 P.M. at Moody-Connolly Funeral Home in Brevard. Hardin’s Gardens Florist in Brevard is in charge of floral arrangements. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the television or media ministry of First Baptist Church Spartanburg, S. C. This Pastor’s messages, prayers, books etc. and ministry nurtured and sustained her and her friends spiritually after their church doors closed. On line condolences may be left at www.moodyconnollyfuneralhome.com. Moody-Connolly Funeral Home and Crematory is in charge of the arrangements
