Virginia Murphy Obituary

Plattsburgh, Watervliet- Virginia M. Murphy passed away peacefully at Champlain Valley Physicians' Hospital after a sudden, brief illness on September 25, 2016. Virginia was born in Troy, NY on August 15, 1927,the daughter of Oliver Dexter and Virginia Carpenter Reid. Virginia resided most of her life in Watervliet, NY, briefly in Hamburg, NY and later enjoyed some of her retirement years living in Glass Lake, NY. Over twenty years ago, she and her late husband, J. Joseph Murphy moved to Plattsburgh and resided on Point au Roche to be closer to family. Virginia was a graduate of Watervliet High School, Class of 1945. She was a past member of Jermain Memorial Presbyterian Church in Watervliet and was currently a member of The First Presbyterian Church in Plattsburgh. During her younger years, Virginia was employed by the New York Telephone Company, but for most of her life, she was a devoted and loving homemaker and caregiver to her family. While raising her family, Virginia enjoyed family vacations to the mid-Atlantic states and later in life looked forward to her trips to Maine and Florida. Virginia enjoyed fishing, gardening, knitting and reading, but her most beloved past time was following baseball, particularly the New York Yankees. Virginia will always be admired and loved for the strength, courage, and independence she showed throughout her lifetime, especially during times of adversity. Survivors include her daughter Linda Leidner and her husband Scott, one grandson Brett Leidner all of Plattsburgh, her sister Susan Dexter Arroyave and her husband, Roberto of Houston, Texas, as well as several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, Virginia was pre deceased by her other late husbands; William Scales(1953), James Hutchinson(1970) son Mark Scales Hutchinson(1971) , her brother, Donald Dexter as well as several aunts, uncles, sister in laws and brother in laws. Calling hours will be held at 10 am Friday, with a funeral service to follow at 11 am at Bowen & Parker Bros. Funeral Home in Latham, NY. Burial will immediately follow at Albany Rural Cemetery, Menands, NY. In lieu of flowers, donations in Virginia's memory may be made to the Fitzpatrick Cancer Center at UVM Champlain Valley Physicians' Hospital, Plattsburgh, or to the charity of one's choice.
