Herbert J. Roes died suddenly at home on August 25,2016.
Herb is survived by Barbara Murray Roes, his children Patricia(Robert) Harrington, Paul Roes and John(Nell) Wilson. He is also survived by Barbaras children, Ken Murray, Scott(Kathy) Murray and Kim( Darran) Leaderach.
Herb was a lifelong resident of Schenectady.He was born February 14,1930 to George and Frieda Roes. Asa young boy, he attended school in the area, except for a few brief years he attended the Mohonk school in the catskills.Herb later returned to the area and attended junior high and graduated high school from Nott Terrace in 1948. His mom passed away when he was 8 years old and his dad George remarried a few years later to Sara Roes. Sara was a school teacher at Oneida Junior high and George was a salesmen for Tetley Tea, so Herb quickly learned that he needed to make his own way due to his new step brother attending college and his parents were assisting with tuition.Herb applied to Rider college. He received a scholarship and his tuition was minimal.Upon graduation, Herb was drafted in the army in May 1952 and served to May 1954. After his military experience, Herb went to work for Travelers Insurance as a insurance payroll auditor and worked for them for 39 years then retired. After he retired, he went to work part time for Charles E. Hock doing what he enjoyed most being an auditor. Herb worked for a few years then decided to retire fully.
Through Herbs life his passion was Boy Scouts and he devoted himself to his passion working his was through to Eagle Scout.He was a huge advocate to get other young people involved and his mentoring of others brought them through the ranks as well. Herb participated in many scouting events at Boyhaven and eventually a trail was named after him. There is also patch recognizing this milestone. Herb was a friendly man and he enjoyed to joke and kid with people.
Herb enjoyed baseball flip flopping between the Boston Red Sox and the L.A. Dodgers. He was also a Green Bay Packers fan. Herb will be missed by his family and his friends.
In lieu of flowers , the family wishes that a donation be made in his name to Boy Scouts Of America 235 Washington Ave Ext. Albany, NY 12205 He was a scouter for 70 years.
