E. Carmel Sullivan Rome, New York Elizabeth Carmel Sullivan, age 68, who loved her Irish heritage as much as she loved the promise and opportunity of America, passed away peacefully August 30, 2016, in Rome, her adopted hometown. Carmel was born in Longford, Ireland, on January 7, 1948, and immigrated to New York City in 1955. She attended Incarnation School, In Washington Heights, where she met her future husband, John Sullivan. They married in 1967, and lived in the Bronx, until they moved to Rome in 1975. After raising her two boys, she went back to school at Griffiss Air Force Base, and graduated with a bachelor’s degree, and then in 1994, a master’s degree in Human Resources from the New School for Social Research. Carmel dedicated her career to the service of her community at the Ava Dorfman Senior Center in Rome, and then the Social Security Administration, where she served as manager in both Rome and Utica offices. She retired from the SSA as district manager in Utica, in 2015. Carmel’s Catholic faith was central to her life and she was a longtime member of St. Mary’s/St. Peter’s Parish. She was predeceased in 2010 by her mother, Elizabeth “Liz” Edmondson, and her former husband, John Sullivan, who died June 27, 2016. Carmel is survived by her father, John Edmondson of Rome; a brother and sister in law, James and Diane Boyan of New Millford, CT; a son, Tim and his wife, Erin, of Simsbury, CT, and their children, John, James, Kate and Maggie Sullivan, and son, Terence and his wife, Kristin, of Denver, CO, and their children, Eamon and Connor Sullivan. A funeral Mass of Christian Burial, officiated by Rev. Philip A. Hearn, will be held Saturday, at 2:00 PM, at St. Peter’s Church. Burial will be in St. Peter’s Cemetery. Relatives and friends may call at Barry Funeral Home, 807 W. Chestnut Street, Saturday, from 11 AM to 1:30 PM, prior to the funeral service.
