Margaret M. Gavin of Defreestville died on June 14, 2011 at Albany Medical Center. Born in 1929 she was the oldest daughter of Dr. Thomas and Helen Rausch Phelan of Rensselaer. She was a graduate of The Academy of the Holy Names and The College of New Rochelle. In 1952 she was married to James M. Gavin MD of Defreestville who survived her. They were happily and lovingly married for 59 years. She is also survived by her beloved children James M. Jr. and his wife Agnes of Saratoga Springs, Thomas W. of Guilderland, Ellen and her husband Bruce Kelley of Minneapolis and John P. MD and his wife Allison Lupinetti MD of Colonie. Margaret is proudly survived by seven grandsons, James M. III and his wife Stacy of Atlanta, GA, Jeffrey of Seattle, WA, Jesse of Los Angeles, CA, Jacob of Rochester, William L. of Rotterdam, William H. and Patrick both of Colonie and two great grandchildren Caitlin and Braden of Atlanta. She is also survived by five step-grandchildren and by eight step great grandchildren. Also survived by her siblings William H. Phelan MD of Glenview, IL, Helen Howe and her husband Edward of Defreestville, Col. Frank Phelan and his wife Gayle of Tampa, FL, Mary Rose Chapman of Waco, TX, and John A. Phelan and his wife Marilyn of Loudonville. Predeceased by her sister-in-law Emily O’Connor, her brother-in-law Robert Chapman, her brother Fr. Thomas Phelan of Troy and a treasured sister-in-law Martina Norwood Phelan. Her family was her life. Funeral from the W.J. Lyons Jr. Funeral Home 1700 Washington Avenue Rensselaer Friday morning at 9:30 and 10:30 at St. John the Evangelist and St. Joseph Church Herrick Street Rensselaer where the Liturgy of Christian Death and Burial will be offered. Relatives and friends are invited and may call at the funeral home Thursday from 4-8 PM. Interment will be in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, East Greenbush.
