Sister Christine Cunningham Obituary

Sister Christine (Alice) Cunningham died October 7, 2016 at Andrus Adult Care Facility in Hastings, New York. Christine was born July 26, 1917 in New York City to Alice Kelly and Owen Cunningham. Sr. Christine’s Baptism name was Alice. Christine entered the Sisters of Our Lady of Christian Doctrine on December 8, 1936 and professed perpetual vows on September 18, 1943. She attended St. Michael’s High School in New York City and later earned a BA in Education from Fordham University. Sister Christine’s ministry assignments included five years at Madonna House on Cherry Street in New York City, one year in New Smyrna Beach, Florida, seven years at Ave Maria House in the Bronx, and nine years in Langley, South Carolina. While living in Langley, Sister Christine ministered at Our Lady of Peace Parish in North Augusta. Her final mission assignments were 1962-1985 at St. Augustine School in the Bronx, and 1985-1993 at St. Ignatius School in Manhattan. In each of these locations Sister Christine taught the first grade classes and frequently served as a catechist for the public school children. Sister Christine was also very active with troops of Girl Scouts and Brownies, particularly in Langley, S.C. and North Augusta, GA. Sister served the Church and her religious congregation as a delegate in Congregation chapters. Sister Christine will be fondly remembered by her family and her religious community as a vibrant woman with a clear mind and her ability to articulate whatever she strongly believed. Sister was predeceased by her siblings, Helen Vito, Leona Vitolo, Rita Foran and Thomas Cunningham. In addition to the Sisters of Our Lady of Christian Doctrine, Sister is survived by her sister, Josephine Walis and many nieces, nephews, grand and great grand nieces and nephews as well as a very faithful friend, Sr. Georgette Lawton, RSHM. Wake is at Marydell Convent, Nyack, NY, on Monday, Oct. 10, from 4 - 8 p.m. A mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Ann’s Church, Nyack NY at 11 a.m. on Oct. 11, 2016 followed by burial at Ascension Cemetery in Airmont, NY. Arrangements were carried out by Hannemann’s Funeral Home at 88 South Broadway, Nyack, NY.
