George Bryant Obituary

George Bernard Bryant of Nyack, N. Y. passed away on Sunday, Oct. 9th after a 7 year illness with Parkinson's. He was born on June 17, 1939 predeceased by his parents George Sr. and Margaret Bryant. His career in keyboard started at age 7 with lessons at St. Ann School. As a student at Nyack H.S. he received his first significant honor, a Morning Music Club Award. That same year he began his organ career as summer replacement organist at St Ann Church. He continued his education at the Julliard School of Music earning Bachelor and Masters Degrees in Organ in 1962. At that time he became a founding member of the Rockland County Music Teacher's Guild. George was involved with the Rockland Symphony as a piano soloist, and a member of the Music Commission of the Archdiocese of N.Y. At St. Ann he organized a youth choir and a teen choir which developed into the existing Adult Choir. In 1978 he was asked to fill in for a weekend at the Temple Beth Torah. This led to a 35 year career as organist and choral director. In 1980 George joined with Harry Gubitz of the B'nai B'rith and held yearly concerts at Rockland Community College as the "Brotherhood Through Music" series. In 1992 George formed the Rockland County Catholic Choir combining members of various church choirs. This group has performed in Canada and on 3 trips to Europe performing for Pope John Paul II at St Peter's Basilica where he realized his dream of playing on the Great Organ. The George Bryant Organ Scholarship was established in 1997 to promote organ students in Sacred Organ Music and has awarded several scholarships. His reputation was that of one of the most foremost teachers of music and will be missed by all. VISITING WILL BE HELD AT ST. ANN’S RC CHURCH, 16 Jefferson St., Nyack, NY on Friday from 3PM to 8 PM and Saturday from 8:30 AM until 9:45 AM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday morning at 10 AM at St. Ann’s RC Church. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to: The Rockland County Music Teachers Guild, The Morning Music Club, or the Rockland County Catholic Choir.
