Elizabeth Cameron Obituary

Cameron, Elizabeth P. “Betty” From her family’s loving embrace to God’s loving arms, Elizabeth Ann “Betty” Cameron, fondly known as Bets, died peacefully on June 21, 2016 at Nyack Manor Nursing Home. She was 84 years old. Betty was born on November 24, 1931 in Albany, NY, daughter of Margaret (Diederich) and Max Pollet, and step-daughter of Arthur D. Patterson. She is predeceased by her parents, and sister Maxine Mitchell. A 1949 graduate of Bennett High School, Buffalo, NY, she was then off to University of Buffalo for Nurse’s training, working at Buffalo General Hospital. She and Bruce were married in 1951 in Indian Town Gap, PA. After living on the Army Base, they moved to Buffalo and then in 1957 moved to the family homestead at 268 South Boulevard. Betty was a woman who gave back to her community; active in the Jaycees, Girl Scouting, Eastern Star, Nyack Schools PTA, Morning Music Club, the Saturday Night Poker Club, bridge clubs, the Nyack Field Club and the First Reformed Church of Nyack. She was the first woman to be president of the Nyack Field Club as well as the first woman to be installed on Consistory at the First Reformed Church. Their house in Upper Grand View was party central with many a pool party, New Year’s party, holiday meal, kid’s birthday party, you name it and Betty had a celebration all ready to go. Retirement saw her and Bruce moving to Lake Ariel, PA in the Hideout. They summered there and wintered in Titusville, Florida. No matter where her location Betty always had a spread and cocktail waiting for all guests and their friends too. She was truly the hostess with the mostest! She was always the life of the party and loved getting together with family and friends. She loved Betty Boop and cooking “for the masses” as she would say. Her fight with cancer began at 68 years old and she beat breast cancer three times. Non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma was her next battle that began in the fall of 2015. Declared cancer free prior to Christmas, she came home to Valley Cottage and worked on getting herself back to being Betty! Unfortunately, her battle was not over. She showed amazing courage and strength during her final recurrence to the very end. She’s an inspiration to those who are fighting this battle. She is well loved and will be missed by all. She is survived by her loving husband of almost 65 years, Bruce Cameron, sons Bruce Cameron Jr (Pam) of St. Charles, IL and James Y. Cameron (Diona) of Nyack as well as her daughters Margaret MacCartney (fiancée Rick) of Altamont, and Carolyn Travers (Chuck) of Valley Cottage; grandchildren Robert (Kelly), Jeff (Lisa), Christopher (Kim), Matthew (Katelynn), Cat MacCartney Schiff (Matt), Cameron Travers (Allie), and Caileigh Travers and 8 great-grandchildren; Ryan, Cara, Ben, Emily, Lauren, Tessa, Louie, and James along with her sister Christine Nieman of East Aurora, NY. Calling hours will be at Hannemann’s Funeral Home on Thursday, July 7th from 4-7pm. A Celebration Memorial Service of her life will be held on Friday, July 8th at 11 am at The First Reformed Church in Nyack. Interment will be private at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Buffalo, NY. Contributions may be made in her memory to The First Reformed Church of Nyack, 18 South Broadway, Nyack, NY 10960.
