Colleen Brosnan Obituary

Colleen M. Brosnan, 83, lost her battle with Lewy Body Dementia on September 6, 2016. She passed away at the Joe Raso Hospice Residence where she was able to leave this world with peace and dignity. Born in Streator, Illinois, she followed her heart to New York City where she met the love of her life, Joseph P. Brosnan. They moved to Rockland County in 1966 and began their life together focused on family and service to their community. Her commitment to others was a common thread in her life. She took great pride in her career as a teacher for the North Rockland School District and received enormous satisfaction in following the successes of her students. She was active on the Exceptional Child PTA. As a founding member of Camp Venture, a Not-for-Profit provider of care for people with developmental disabilities, she - along with the other forces of nature, known as the “Venture Ladies” - changed history for people with developmental disabilities in Rockland County, creating the services lacking for their children and all children with disabilities at that time. Colleen was a Camp Venture board member for many years before becoming a member of the Rockland County Commission on Quality Care, an advocacy program for people with special needs. Devoted Mother of J.Pat Brosnan, Maire Brosnan Katavolos (Gregory), Megan Brosnan Jones (Kevin) and Maura Brosnan Cozza (Jim). The light in her eyes shone the brightest over her grandchildren Sarah, Alexander, Cole, Molly, Aidan and Liam. The family would like to thank the many compassionate people who helped us along this journey: the loving community at Dowling Gardens, the administrators, nurses, and aids from United Hospice of Rockland, in particular, the dedicated staff at the Joe Raso Hospice Residence and Dr. Melissa J. Nirenberg of NYU Langone. Donations graciously accepted in Colleen’s name at Hospice of Rockland (11 Stokum Lane, New City, NY 10956) and Camp Venture (25 Smith Street, Suite 510, Nanuet, NY 10954). Visiting hours will be 3:00 to 7:00pm on Friday September 9 at Hannemann Funeral Home in Nyack, NY. A funeral Mass is scheduled for Saturday, September 10 at 10:00 am at St. Ann’s Church in Nyack, NY. Burial will follow at Rockland County Veterans Cemetery.
