<p>AKWESASNE – After a courageous battle with cancer, Mrs. Yvonne Marie Gibson Peters, “Ieriwakwatakwas”, 58, of 318 School Road, Snye, peacefully passed away Saturday afternoon, July 9, 2016 at her home with her family by her side.</p><p><br></p><p>Yvonne was born September 9, 1957 in Syracuse, the daughter of the late Charles Thomas Gibson, II and Rosemarie Cornelius Gibson. She attended schools on the Onondaga Nation and graduated from Lafayette High School. She later attended and graduated from SUNY Potsdam with a Bachelor’s degree in Sociology. </p><p><br></p><p>Yvonne worked for the St. Regis Day Care and Head Start for a period of time and also for the Mohawk Council of Akwesasne. For the past 12 years, she has been the program director with the St. Regis Mohawk Tribe Domestic Violence Program. She was a member of the Akwesasne Women’s Singers and supported the Akwesasne Cancer Support Group. She enjoyed doing traditional native crafting that included making moccasins and beading. She also enjoyed making teddy bears, traveling – especially to the ocean and cherished the time that her family and friends were at her home visiting and eating dinners.</p><p><br></p><p>Yvonne is survived by her loving husband of 38 years, Michael J.; her children, Patricia Ann Peters of Snye; Michael Peters, Jr. of Florida; David and Yolande Peters of Snye; and Matthew Peters and Keshia Alguire of Cornwall; and her grandchildren, Cassidy Rose, Alex Homer, Eli, Kylee, Aryanah, Kiarah, Abree, Drayton, Bailey, and Trinity. She is also survived by her sisters, Victoria Gibson and Delia Gibson, both of Onondaga Nation; her brothers, Charles T. Gibson, III, of Onondaga Nation, Freeman and Beverly Gibson of Six Nations, and Dwayne Gibson of Illinois; an aunt, Corrine Johnson of Syracuse; and many nieces and nephews. </p><p><br></p><p>Friends may call starting 4:00 PM Monday at the Akwesasne Homemakers, where funeral services will be held Wednesday 2:00 PM. Burial will follow in St. Lawrence Cemetery, St. Regis. </p><p><br></p><p>Memorial contributions may be made in her memory to the Akwesasne Cancer Support Group or the Akwesasne Women’s Sing</p>
