Obituary
AKWESASNE – Mrs. Julia A. Thomas, affectionately known as “Mama Thomas”, 68, of 23 Angus Thomas Memorial Road, St. Regis, peacefully passed away Friday morning, July 1, 2016 at her home under the loving care of her family.
Julia was born September 6, 1947 in Akwesasne, the daughter of the late William and Anna Jacobs Gray and attended Salmon River Central Schools. On July 10, 1965, she married Ronald Richard Thomas at St. Regis Catholic Church with Rev. Michael Jacobs, officiating; he predeceased her on July 19, 2004.
Julia was a home health aide for North Country Health Services in Malone for many years until her retirement. She was a communicant of St. Regis Catholic Church and enjoyed playing bingo and going to the casino with her daughters. She also enjoyed bowling, playing cards, gardening, fishing, watching softball, and spending time with her grandchildren. She was also an avid Montreal Canadians fan.
Julia is survived by her three daughters, Diane M. Thomas and her husband, Thomas Cree, Patricia and Leanne Thomas, all of Akwesasne; her son-in-law, Eric Warner of Norfolk; her grandchildren, Annalouise, Mary, William, Nicholas, Cynthia, Eric, Louie, Dalton, and Makayla; and her great grandchildren, Samaira, Paris, Rihanna, Syanne, Serenidy, Quorra Lee, Julian, and Joelle. She is also survived by her sisters, Joanne and Edward Mitchell of Akwesasne and Marie Pierce of Rooseveltown; her god children, Heather Mitchell, Leroy Jackson, and Little Boys; and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents and her husband, she is predeceased by a daughter, Bessie T. Warner on October 28, 2015; her sisters, Margaret A. Jackson on July 16, 1987; Harriett Jacobs on September 5, 2002; her brothers, Abraham K. Gray on April 1, 1979 and John William Gray on November 6, 2006.
Friends may call at her home, 23 Angus Thomas Memorial Road, starting 4:00 PM Sunday until 1:00 PM Tuesday. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Tuesday 2:00 PM at St. Regis Catholic Church with Rev. Jerome Pastores, celebrating. Following cremation, burial will be in Kateri Cemetery at the convenience of the family.
