Sylvia Marie Holt Obituary

WAPPINGERS FALLS – Sylvia Marie (Lanthier) Holt passed away at her home on October 13, 2016 with her beloved husband at her side.

Mrs. Holt was born on October 27, 1927 in Lowell, MA, the daughter of the late Annie and Joseph Lanthier. She graduated from St. Louis Academy for Girls in Lowell in 1946. In her early life, she worked at Fort Devens and later served as a secretary to a physician.

Sylvia was married in 1953 and she and her husband, Ralph J. Holt, celebrated 63 years of marriage together. In this marriage, they had five sons. She is survived by her four sons and their wives: Ralph J. and Mary Jane Holt, Dennis M. and Lori Holt, John P. and Denise Holt, Christopher P. and Karen Holt. She also had nine grandchildren: Patrick, Matthew, Megan, Douglas, Steven, Robert, Rachel, Shannon and Caitlin. Sylvia and Ralph lost their youngest son, Brian H. Holt, in 1986 – one week before he was to graduate from Siena College.

Mrs. Holt was also an aunt to her brother’s children, Steven, Susan, Judith, Joseph, Paula and Patricia Lanthier of Lowell, MA. She was also an aunt to Anne Holt Knapp and her family, Kyle, John, Ellen and Michael from Oregon and to John Holt’s family, Cheryl and Susan.

For more than 30 years, she worked beside and supported her husband with the Town of Wappinger Recreation Programs. Sylvia devoted much of her time to the Town of Wappinger Little League Program including volunteering with the Ladies Auxiliary. Sylvia and Ralph also coached for the girls’ softball teams.

She loved to watch her children participate in sports. She would go to as many games as possible. When Brian, who played baseball for John Jay High School, had a game in Kingston, she was there. She received a standing ovation from the entire team when the team had kidded Brian, telling him she wouldn’t drive there. She was there!

She loved to participate in sports herself. She loved to bowl as part of a women’s league and travel to different towns. She was a very active lady and her children were her love and joy.

Calling hours will be held on Sunday from 2-6pm at the McHoul Funeral Home, Inc., 895 Route 82, Hopewell Junction. The Mass of Christian Burial will be offered on Monday at 10am at St. Columba Church, 895 Route 82, Hopewell Junction followed by interment in St. Denis Cemetery.
