Philomena “Phyllis” Hughes, 86, a resident of Beekman since 1994 and formerly of the Bronx, died on October 18, 2016 at her home surrounded by her loving family. On June 28, 1930 in the Bronx, she was born to Salvator and Philomena Zeccardi, and raised by Dominic and Gladys Mamo Diaco. Phyllis was lovingly known as the “Mayor of Beekman Rec” and the “Park Matron” as she spent much of her time volunteering at the Town Recreation Center with many programs including the Toddler & Tots Preschool and Summer Camp Programs. She was a member of the Beekman Fire Company Auxiliary where she often assisted with Bingo. She also served as an Elections Inspector. She was honored by NYS Senator Greg Ball for her service to the community, as well as by the Beekman Baptist Church for her many years of service. In 2008, she was inducted into the Jack French Memorial Hall of Fame for her contributions to the town. Phyllis is survived by her husband of 62 years, Joseph T. Hughes; her sons and daughters-in-law, Joseph and Cathy Hughes of New Windsor, and Thomas and Mara Hughes of Beekman; her grandchildren, Stephanie, Mariana, Joseph and Jennifer; her great-grandchildren, Isabella, Alex and Matteo; her brother, Carmine Zeccardi; and her sisters, Tessie Powell and Rosemary Fairclough. Calling hours will be held on Wednesday from 7-9pm at the McHoul Funeral Home, Inc., 895 Route 82, Hopewell Junction. The Mass of Christian will be offered on Thursday at 10am at St. Denis Church, 602 Beekman Road, Hopewell Junction. Interment will follow in St. Denis Cemetery.
