Merlyn Fino Hopewell Junction, New York Obituary

Merlyn Fino

On Sunday, July 17, 2016, Merlyn Navom Fino passed on to her eternal rest at Vassar Brothers Medical Center, Poughkeepsie with her daughter, Margaret Fino Kidder by her side. Born October 31, 1922 in Hudson, Merlyn Navom Fino was the daughter of Michael and Margaret (Van Heusen) Navom. In 1938, she married Gary Fino and began a 78 year adventure that included traveling up and down the East Coast following his work. As wife and homemaker, Merlyn found many opportunities to contribute to her community. While Gary was off fighting in World War II, Merlyn did her part as a riveter (our very own “Rosie”). During the Korean War while Gary worked on a plant that produced fighter planes, Merlyn became a spotter and could identify every type of aircraft. During the child rearing years, she was a Brownie troop leader, and a parent volunteer at St. Mary’s, helping to cook for basketball games and chaperoning every class trip!!! As an “empty nester”, she volunteered as a pink lady at Columbia Memorial and worked in the thrift shop. She was a member of the Holy Family Church Rosary Society, and she and Gary were Salvation Army “bell ringers” each year on Warren Street. Merlyn and Gary worked hard and planned ahead for their retirement. As a result, they were true “snowbirds” heading to Fort Lauderdale each winter, enjoying the trip down and back as much as their time there. Atlantic City was a favorite stop over and it was a family joke to ask how much of our inheritance went into the slots. They never lost their love of travel, meeting new people and seeing new sights. Merlyn was predeceased by her husband, Gary Fino, on May 29, 2016; her parents, Michael and Margaret Navom; her brother, Michael Navom Jr.; her sister-in-law, Shirle Navom; and her son-in-law, James R. Kidder. Merlyn is survived by two daughters, Pauline (Fino) DeSantis and husband Phil of Yorktown Heights, and Margaret (Fino) Kidder of Poughkeepsie; six grandchildren, Katherine DeSantis-Martin and husband Tom, Margaret (DeSantis) Spencer and husband Dale, Guy DeSantis, James F. Kidder, Phillis (DeSantis) Clermont and husband Rob, and Merlyn (Kidder) Akhtar; her sister-in-law, Jean (Pascquale) Fino; nine great-grandchildren, Philip, Raymonda and Paul DeSantis Martin, Dale Jr. and Michael Spencer, Ryan, Mathew and Nicholas Clermont, and Aldrin Akhtar, as well as several nieces and nephews, and many special friends including, Mickey and Brenda Aggripino, Tom Cody and Liz Friedman Rice. While we are saddened by the loss of both our parents within such a short time, we know they are together again, soul mates for eternity. Our mother believed in volunteer work and giving a helping hand whenever she could. In lieu of flowers, please offer assistance to a friend in need. Services will be held on Saturday at 11am at the McHoul Funeral Home, Inc., 895 Route 82, Hopewell Junction. Please visit Merlyn’s Book of Memories at www.mchoulfuneralhome.com.
