George Hudson Obituary

HAMILTON, NY: George C. Hudson, Jr., 75, passed away Saturday, November 16, 2013 at Upstate University Hospital in Syracuse. Born in rural Georgia on November 21, 1937, he was a son of George C., Sr. and Mary Loucile Pruett Hudson. Educated at Duke and the University of Minnesota where he earned his PhD, George taught at Colgate University from 1969 until this time last year. His courses were legendary and included “Milton,” and "17th Century Literature, “Literature and Medicine,” as well as courses on Haiku and on Japanese film that changed many a student’s life. George was a world traveler equally comfortable guiding visitors in London, Kyoto, Hiroshima or Nagasaki, or in the Swiss, Austrian or Italian Alps; he championed Colgate’s signature study abroad programs over more than 15 semesters, and headed programs for the Smithsonian Institution as well. A man of stature, and no small grandeur, he could be seen walking through the English countryside on Dartmoor, or in his own hills and gardens. At Colgate, George Hudson was University Marshal for more than a decade, leading Colgate through all the Institution’s defining ceremonies, and much loved by students, alumni and faculty alike. George is survived by his beloved wife Chikako Ikeguchi, son George Taro Hudson, and sister, Carolyn Ketter. A memorial service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to Friend in Deed, Annual Campaign for Upstate University Hospital, 750 E. Adams St., Syracuse, NY 13210. Arrangements have been entrusted to Burgess & Tedesco Funeral Home, 25 Broad St., Hamilton.
