Obituary
William J. Smith, age 90, of Fredonia, N.Y., died after a lengthy illness on Sunday January 10, 2016 at his home with his loving family at his side. Bill was born on January 15, 1925 at home in Fredonia, the son of the late John H. Schmitz and Henrietta “Hattie” Dietrick A life-long resident of the Fredonia area, he attended Fredonia schools and graduated from Fredonia High School.
Bill was a WWII U.S. Army Veteran serving from 1943-1946. He attained the rank of Sargent in the Army, and served as a Medic in the Philippines. He was employed by Bentley & Renkins Dairy, and as a driver and salesman for Koch’s Brewery, from where he retired. Bill was a member of several organizations including: Fredonia Fire Dept. where he served as Chief, American Legion Fredonia Memorial Post 59 the, VFW and the Beaver Club. He loved gardening and was a parishioner of St. Joseph Church in Fredonia.
Bill is survived by: his wife of 66 years, Arline(Sharra) Smith; four children: Kim (Steven) Nicosia of Hamburg, N. Y., David (Liza) of Warminster, PA., Lauren (Dennis) Smith of Fredonia, N.Y., Brian (Lisa) of Brandon, FL; , four grandchildren: Michelle (Tripp) Brown of Canton, GA., Christopher (Jamie) Nicosia of Fort Mill, S.C., Jenna M. Smith of Fredonia, N.Y. and Melissa E. Smith of Fredonia, N.Y.; three great grandchildren: Isabella and Gabriella Brown of Canton, GA., and Jack Nicosia of Fort Mill S.C. Besides his parents, Bill is predeceased by his brother Eugene Smith. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Fredonia Fire Dept. or the Chautauqua County Humane Society 2825 Strunk Rd, Jamestown, N.Y. 14701. The family would like to thank Hospice Chautauqua County, their family and friends for the support and kindness extended to their family.
Calls may be made Wednesday from 2-4 & 7-9 pm at the LARSON-TIMKO Funeral Home, 20 Central Avenue, Fredonia, N.Y. where prayers will be offered Thursday morning at 9:15 am, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Joseph Church, Fredonia, N.Y at 10:00 a.m. Full Military Honors, under the auspices of the Dunkirk Joint Veterans Council, will be accorded at the Church following the Funeral Mass.
