Charles W. Bergin Obituary

Charles W. Bergin, 58, passed away suddenly at his home in East Meadow, NY on October 21st, 2016. The owner and founder of Cardiac Equipment Services, Inc., a medical services company, he is survived by his beloved wife of 22 years, Margaret, his adored children, Daniel, Meghan, and Erin, and his loyal companion, King; along with his mother, Margaret Bergin, siblings James Bergin (Christine), Peg Bergin, Eileen Lanciotti (Rob), Michael Bergin (Kari) and Patrick Bergin (Chris); and 13 nieces and nephews. He is pre-deceased by his father, James J. Bergin. Known to many as Charlie (or Chum), Bergin arrived in this world at 12:35 AM on November 15th, 1957 in Rockville Centre, NY, the third of six children born to Margaret (Kelly) and Jim Bergin, a buyer for J.C. Penney’s. Raised with his siblings on Long Island, Charlie grew up on Ava Drive and developed a lifelong love for his hometown of East Meadow, where he made countless friends including his partner in mischief, John Widemann, known as “Whitey” (while Charlie was known as “Red”). His love of “the Meadow” was rivaled only by his delight in summers spent with his family in the Adirondacks at Lake George. Charlie so enjoyed his time there, he frequently expressed his desire that his children would one day share this experience with him — one of many dreams which he later fulfilled. Charlie always possessed a natural curiosity for how things worked, and displayed an affinity for fixing things, a skill he honed in shop class at East Meadow High School. Exceedingly self-reliant, Charlie began making his way in the world soon after graduating high school in 1975, working a variety of jobs while attending the Grumman Data Systems Institute, where he completed the Electronic Technology Program. He also earned an Associates degree in Electronic Technology from Nassau Community College, where he earned Dean’s List honors multiple times, graduating near the top of his class. From there he began his professional career, working in a variety of electronic technician positions in health care systems, before becoming a Technical Support Specialist, Cardiac Assist/Patient Monitoring for Datascope Corp. in New Jersey. Charlie worked there for 7 years, winning the President’s Award as Outstanding Service Representative in 1988, earning an unforgettable vacation to Hawaii for himself and Margaret. Charlie ultimately fulfilled his dream of being his own boss when he launched his business, Cardiac Equipment Services, Inc. in 1993. Providing technical services to hospitals, health care facilities, doctors offices and gyms, Charlie quickly built Cardiac Equipment into a successful business, earning tremendous respect from his many clients for his technical expertise, his high ethical standards, and his playful sense of humor. While interviewing for a job earlier in his career at Central General Hospital (now Northwell Plainview) in 1983, Charlie’s life changed forever when he met his future wife, Margaret Mahoney, then working in the Central Supply department. Margaret relays that when they first met, “we locked eyes, and I felt we were destined to be together.” Charlie also felt a spark (although he was dating someone else at the time), and soon began eating lunch with Margaret and other colleagues daily. Complaining to her boss that Charlie was always stealing her lunch, her colleague declared, “That boy likes you!” It would be two years before they began to date, and once they did, they quickly fell in love and became best friends. Next to Margaret, Charlie’s other great love at the time was his red Harley Davidson motorcycle, named “Ruby.” Margaret and Charles spent countless weekends on Ruby, traveling to visit his siblings, and making the acquaintance of other motorcycle enthusiasts along the way. A non-traditional biker who wore cleanly pressed jeans or chinos, Charlie earned the nickname of “Yuppie Biker” from his new friends. Charlie eventually sold Ruby to start his business, but he never forgot her, keeping her photo and a model Harley in his office as a reminder. Charles and Margaret were married on September 10th, 1994, and decided there was only one place to raise their future family — East Meadow. They moved into their home on Rugby Street, and one day later welcomed their first child, Daniel Charles (now 20), who was followed by two daughters — Meghan Anne (18) and Erin Anne (14). As a father, Charlie discovered his true calling — delighting in time spent with each of his children, encouraging their dreams, providing them with valuable life lessons, and spoiling them rotten. Having shared a particularly close bond with his late father, Charlie strived to establish this same, deep connection with his children. His lasting legacy of unconditional love for them is one of the greatest gifts he shared. Charlie worked hard to provide a comfortable and loving home for his wife and children, and this is where he was at his happiest. He loved to indulge his sweet tooth with nightly bowls of ice cream, was never without a hot cup of coffee for long, and enjoyed taking long walks with his dog King, sitting on his porch, and relaxing on the sofa with the latest issue of the Star or Enquirer. A devoted son, Charlie enjoyed weekly calls with his mother, and treasured the bonds of family forged with his siblings Jimmy, Pegs, Eileen, Mikey and Pat — especially family gatherings for the holidays, including their legendary annual Memorial Day picnic in Eisenhower Park. To know Charlie was to love him. Blessed with the gift of gab, Charlie loved to talk and instantly connected with so many people the minute he met them. He immediately put others at ease, amusing them with his unique take on the world, making them laugh with his hilarious impersonations, and endearing himself to them with his considerable displays of warmth, affection and generosity. He will be mourned by all those who knew and loved him, especially his wife and children, the extended Bergin and Mahoney families, friends, and all those whose lives were touched by his tremendous compassion, his abiding loyalty, and his deep faith in God.
