Frederick Meserall Obituary

FREDERICK G. MESERALL WWII Veteran, Optician Immediately after Pearl Harbor, Fred Meserall joined the Army and served in the Medical Corps where he operated one of the military’s first mobile optical units. Stationed on the battlefront lines, it provided eyeglasses and optical services for troops during the campaigns of North Africa and Italy. Mr. Meserall was a Trenton native and after graduating from Trenton High School was employed by Bausch & Lomb Optical Co. After his Army discharge in 1945 he founded Meserall and Co. Opticians in Haddonfield, NJ (son Fred J. now carries on the business), later opening branch stores in Camden and Cherry Hill. He served on the NJ Board of Ophthalmic Examiners for several years, and was a member of state and national optical associations. He was instrumental in establishing the Ophthalmic Science degree program at Camden County College in 1972. After the death of his first wife, Eileen Gamo, Fred married Betty Jo Martin of Shreveport, LA. They enjoyed travel, their mutual love of music, and many winters aboard their boat in the Florida Keys before making their winter home in Mesa, AZ. At age 91, Fred and his 90-year old partner were featured in an exhibition tennis match called the Legends of Tennis in Arizona; unable to find opponents of their age, they defeated younger 80-year olds. Besides tennis, Mr. Meserall was an avid golfer, boater, scuba diver and snow skier, and in retirement learned to play the saxophone. He is a member of Tavistock Country Club, a past member Merchantville Country Club, a past officer of the Haddonfield Rotary Club, and a member of Christ Presbyterian Church in Marlton. Mr. Meserall died on October 15th at age 96. Besides his wife of 52 years, he is survived by son, Frederick J. Meserall and his wife Susan, two granddaughters Melissa (Steve) Lamp and Amanda (Ray) Hooley, four great grandchildren all of Cherry Hill, and two nephews. Relatives and friends are invited to the viewing on Thursday October 20th from 9:00-11:00 AM at the Bradley Funeral Home, Rt. 73 & Evesham Rd., Marlton, NJ. Funeral Service will begin at 11:00 AM. Interment will follow at Brig. Gen. William C. Doyle Veterans Cemetery, N. Hanover Twp., NJ. Memorial donations may be made in Frederick’s name to Samaritan Hospice, 5 Eves Dr., Suite 300, Marlton, NJ 08053.
