Mildred P. Damiano of Hackettstown died on Tuesday, Dec. 9, 2008, at the Hackettstown Medical Center. She was 80 years old. Relatives and friends are invited to attend the funeral service on Saturday, Dec. 13, at 10 a.m. at the Madison Memorial Home, 159 Main St., Madison, with entombment to follow at the Fairmount Cemetery in Newark. Visitation is on Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Born in Newark, Mrs. Damiano lived in Newark and Irvington before moving to Hackettstown in 1982. She was a funeral director in Newark. She owned the Damiano Funeral Home, which was started by her father, the late S. Charles Damiano. After moving out of Newark she owned the Damiano Funeral Service and was a licensed funeral director for a total of 52 years. A 1952 graduate of Seton Hall University with a mortuary degree, Mrs. Damiano passed the accreditation exam as a public relations practioner in 1976. She was the present manager and owner of Funeral Firm in New Jersey and had been a public relations consultant, and the director and chairman of Spencer Savings Bank, SLA. Mrs. Damiano was the president of the Italian Institute of Seton Hall; honorary president of Damiano-Nittoli Association, awarding scholarships, civic and cultural and educational projects in the northern New Jersey area; president of the Essex and Union Counties' Funeral Directors Association; chariman of the Newark Senior Citizens of Hobby Show; board member of the Council of Social Agencies of Essex and West Hudson counties; a lecturer and columnist; the first woman president of the New Jersey State Funeral Directors Association; executive vice president of the New Jersey Chapter of the Public Relations Society of America; the first woman president of the Essex County Grand Jury Association; the first woman director of the Associated Funeral Directors Service International Board of Directors; the president of the Board of Trustees of Old First Church, Newark, also serving five years as treasurer, and the first woman president of Public Relations Society of America, New Jersey Chapter. She was predeceased by her beloved husband, A. Alfred Nittoli. She is survived by her loving children, Marion A. Parker, Mimi R. English and Charles A. Damiano-Nittoli, and five devoted grandchildren, Alexander, Melissa, Alison, Joshua and Grant. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Old First Presbyterian Church, 820 Broad St. , Newark N.J. 07102, in her memory would be appreciated.
