Phyllis Brown Diedrichsen Obituary

Phyllis Diedrichsen died at home in Sparks, Nevada just a few days after her 95th birthday. She was born in the same farmhouse where her mother had been born, in Harlan County Nebraska. Her grandparents soon sold their farm and her parents, Edna and Merton Lane, moved to Republican City, Nebraska where they opened a clothing store. After graduation from high school, she moved to Lincoln, Nebraska where she sang in a trio known as the Lane Girls, and got a job as a waitress at Mrs. Maul’s Tea Room, where she met a young dish washer named Lloyd Diedrichsen. They were married on January 21, 1945 and “took care of each other” for the next 71 years. Lloyd died less than 3 months before Phyllis. Phyllis accompanied Lloyd to Fort Pierce, Florida, where he did his initial Naval training, and after his discharge the two of them returned to Lincoln where he attended dental school. They lived briefly in Humboldt, Nebraska and in 1952 she and two young sons boarded a west bound train in Grand Island, Nebraska to join her husband who had just purchased a dental practice in Sparks, Nevada. She immersed herself in Northern Nevada life, content in being a “worker” rather than a leader in numerous organizations, making lasting friendships through Rotary, the Dental Society, the Women’s Auxiliary of Washoe Medical Center, the Sparks Methodist Church, and especially through her membership in various choirs and choral groups. She played the piano, had a beautiful voice, and derived great pleasure in all types of music. She also took great pleasure and pride in her family. She is survived by sons, David (wife Jane) of Reno, NV with grandsons Jeffrey of Essex, VT and Andrew (wife Rocky) and great-grandson Benjamin of Reno, NV; Roger of Fallon, NV with granddaughters Jordan Nichols (husband Sharrieff Rahim) and great grandsons Elijah, Aesop, and Makai of Fallon, NV, and Michelle of Fallon, NV; John of Gardnerville, NV with granddaughter Kristen Van Elden (husband Alexander) of Costa Mesa, CA; and Lane (wife Tina) of Elko, NV. She was preceded in death by her father, Merton R. Lane 1892-1953; mother, Edna (Brown) 1898-1993; and husband, Lloyd 1923-2016. There were numerous dedicated and compassionate caregivers and family members as well as the teams from Renown Home Care and Renown Hospice, and Dr Bryan Young who enabled Phyllis to spend her final days in her home. The family would especially like to thank the empathetic and professional staff of Comfort Keepers and Lisa Ray Walsh. A memorial service to celebrate Phyllis’ life will be held at the Sparks United Methodist Church, 1231 Pyramid Way, Sparks, Nevada on Friday, August 12 at 2:00 P.M. In lieu of flowers, a memorial gift may be made to the Endowment Fund of the Sparks United Methodist Church in Phyllis’ name.
