Obituary for Roy Ichord, Sr.
Roy Wayne Ichord, Sr. passed away at 8:20 a.m. Saturday, June 28, 2008 at the Harry S. Truman Memorial VA Hospital, Columbia, Missouri, at the age of 77 years, 5 months and 29 days.
Roy was born December 30, 1930 in Licking, Missouri. He was one of six children born to the union of the late Richard Howard and Minda (Curtis) Ichord.
Roy enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1948. He was a veteran of the Korean War and received the Korean Service Medal with four bronze service stars and the United Nations Service Medal along with other awards and commendations. Roy was medically retired in 1953 after an auto accident. He had attained the rank of Corporal.
On September 6, 1952 in Benton, Arkansas, Roy was united in marriage with Bessie Lurena Ashworth, and to this union three children were born: Roy Wayne, Jr., William Lee and Connie Jo. They were later blessed with five grandchildren and two great grandchildren: Mindy, Matthew, Melissa, Jessica, John, Devin and Demi.
From 1969 to 1974, Roy worked in Grand Island, Nebraska as a quality maintenance supervisor on the Air Force Base. Upon moving back to the Duke, Missouri area, he enjoyed taking care of his farm.
Roy was a member of the Harry Herron Memorial DAV Chapter 49 at Crocker and the William C. Anderson Memorial American Legion Post 331, St. Robert. He enjoyed traveling, fishing, golf and the time he could spend with grandchildren and other family and friends.
Roy will be very greatly missed by his wife: Bessie; three children: R.W. Ichord, Jr. of San Francisco, CA, William Lee Ichord (Peggy) of Duke, MO and Connie Jo Merckling of Douglasville, GA; five grandchildren: Mindy Hatfield (Charles) and their children, Devin and Demi, Matthew Merckling, Jessica Ichord, Jonathan Ichord and Melissa Merckling along with several nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.
In addition to his parents, Roy was preceded in death by five siblings: Richard “Dick” Ichord, Thelma Kaley, Geneva Mitchell, Reba Curtis and Juanita Dinegar.
Funeral services were held at 10:00 A.M. Monday, June 30, 2008 in the Waynesville Memorial Chapel with Chaplain (CPT) John C. Carey officiating. The songs “Rock of Ages” and “Amazing Grace” were played. Serving were family and friends.
Burial with military honors followed in the Big Piney Cemetery. Military honors were provided by the United States Army of Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri. Services were under the direction of Waynesville Memorial Chapel.
