Marjorie Elaine Smith Portland Marjorie Elaine Smith, 87, loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and great-great-grandmother, passed away peacefully at her home September 20, 2016. Marjorie was born in Ionia County September 10, 1929 to the late William Helmes and Rosa Mae Helmes. She attended High School in Ionia Michigan and married Joseph Bernard Smith January 3, 1948. She started her working career at Holly Carburetor in Portland and worked for 17 years at the Chrysler Trim Plant in Lyons where she served as a Union Steward and Vice President of the local union. She proudly served as a member of the Women's Auxiliary VFW Post 4090. She enjoyed sing-a-longs, traveling with family to places such Alaska to California, canoeing in her younger years, visiting the casinos, gardening and watching her hummingbirds. Most of all, she enjoyed visiting with her family on the back porch or in her favorite easy chair. She was proceeded in death by her husband Joseph Bernard Smith, her parents Rosa Mae Helmes and William Sylus Helmes; her siblings Harold Helmes, Mary Esther Daddazio, Phyllis Coston, Betty Heyn, Melvin Helmes, Perry Helmes and granddaughter Stacy Smith. She is survived by her children Carol (Terry) Kellogg, Mike Smith, Dan (Roxane) Smith, Judy (Bill) Reid, Jerry Smith, Ricky Smith, Vicky Smith, Dennis (Ann) Smith, Colleen (Sam) Yim, Steve (Lynda) Smith, and Scott (Diane) Smith; 29 grand children, 33 great grandchildren, and 18 great-great grandchildren. She is also survived by sister-in-law Nancy Davis, Marilyn and Bob Eliser, special nieces Sandy Platte and Mary Lou Chickering, special nephew Larry Helmes, plus many more nieces and nephews. The Memorial Service will be conducted by Pastor Fred Lab at 11:00 a.m., Friday, September 23, 2016 at the Lehman Funeral Home, 210 E. Bridge St., Portland. Entombment will be in Portland Cemetery.
