Joan Allison

Joan Marie Allison, age 77 of Ludington, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on Monday September 19, 2016 at Oakview Medical Care Facility in Ludington. She was born to Harcourt E. and Arlene M. (Tonn) Quick in Scottville at the home of her grandparents, Albert and Ida Tonn, on their wedding anniversary, January 13, 1939. Joan first began working at Brooke’s Drug Store and upon graduating from Scottville High School in 1957, worked at Star Watch Case in Ludington. In 1958 she married Jim Allison at St. Jerome’s Church in Scottville and they began the rewarding and challenging life of farming. During this time, Joan utilized her culinary skills in food service at Mason County Eastern and the Boy Scout Camp at Barton’s Lake. She also worked at Farm Bureau Co-Op in Scottville and later obtained her insurance license, selling insurance in Mason and Muskegon Counties. After retiring from insurance, she worked at Day Break Adult Care in Norton Shores until moving from Muskegon to Ludington several years later. While in Muskegon, Joan joined the Red Hat Society and continued her membership after moving back to Mason County. She was an avid reader and enjoyed cooking, canning, and playing cribbage. A skilled seamstress, Joan’s family and friends cherish the handmade quilts and blankets she took great joy in creating. She was well-loved by the Oakview staff where she resided the last several years, displaying admirable resilience, strength, and courage. The family would like to extend heartfelt gratitude and appreciation to Oakview personnel for the love and kindness shown to Joan. Joan is survived by her children, Jayne (Greg) Knudsen of Ludington, George (Ginger) Allison of Custer; brothers, Harcourt (Bud) Quick and Jane Krolzyk of Ludington, Robert (Susan) Quick of North Carolina, 8 grandchildren, 6 great-grandchildren, many nieces and nephews, and wonderful friends. Along with her parents, Joan was preceded in death by her son, John Allison, and sister-in-law, Barbara Quick. Cremation has taken place and a memorial mass of Christian Burial will be at 11:00AM on Friday September 23, 2016 at St. Simon Catholic Church in Ludington with Father Wayne Wheeler celebrant. The family will receive friends for visitation from 10:00AM until the time of mass. Final interment will take place at Brookside Cemetery in Scottville. Memorial contributions in memory of Joan may be directed to the Custer Fire Department, Ludington Area Catholic School or Patient Grants c/o American Kidney Fund.
