Harriette Barrington Obituary

Harriette Nunn (Polly) Barrington, 92, passed away at Butterworth Hospital after a short illness on September 20, 2016. She was born in Roanoke, Virginia, October 30, 1923 and was the daughter of the late William Vance and Sue Hutton Nunn. Harriette moved with her family to Virginia’s “Tidewater Area” while in her teens and there completed her formal education. She lived and worked in the Hampton, Newport News, Yorktown and Williamsburg areas for much of her life. Harriette was employed in a number of positions, including bookkeeper, legal secretary, treasurer and corporate officer, and was pleased to say she’d never had a job she didn’t like. She continued working until retiring to Ludington in 1989. Harriette married John Edward Barrington of Ludington, Michigan, on November 23, 1978 (Thanksgiving day) in Newport News, Virginia. John was an Army aviator and Harriette deployed with him on several military assignments. She considered them grand adventures and they took her to Tacoma, Washington, Chicago, Illinois, Seoul, South Korea, and Washington, D.C. Our loves and likes, in part, define us. Harriette was a “people person” who loved making new friends and liked to say she’d never met a stranger. She enjoyed games, especially bridge, and sharing time with family and friends. The happiness her family gave her was absolutely beautiful. Harriette was a gifted decorator and took great pleasure in helping others plan and carry out home beautification projects. A voracious reader, she “consumed” nearly half a dozen books a week. Christmases and birthdays filled her with joy and held for her a special kind of “magic.” She’d say, “You only have what you give away,” and the flow of cards and gifts to friends and family seemed never ending. Harriette’s love of people led her to join several civic and social organizations. They included, among others, the Woman’s Literary Club of Ludington, the Ludington Mural Society, Daughters of the American Revolution, United Daughters of the Confederacy and the Philanthropic Education Organization (PEO). She held a variety of positions in these groups, twice serving as the literary club’s president. Harriette’s service with PEO helped a number of young women achieve a college education. Harriette’s love of God and church led her to serve them both in many ways. She taught Sunday school for several years, was vice president of church women, performed church treasurer duties and accomplished countless benevolence activities in many capacities. She was a member of Ludington’s Trinity Evangelical Free Church at the time of her passing. Besides her mother and father, Harriette was predeceased by two sisters and their husbands, Mary Sue (Fred) Hall and June (William) Carpenter, as well as brother, William Vance Nunn. Several beloved family members survive Harriette. They include husband, John, of Ludington; and daughter, Susan (Kenneth) Moorman of Williamsburg, Virginia. Three granddaughters and a grandson survive her. They are Meredith (Eric) Strahan and Caroline (Timothy) Shea, both of Chesapeake, Virginia, Jamie (Alexander) Slawski of Dallas, Texas, and Grayson (Jennifer) Gilmore of Atlanta, Georgia. Seven great-grandsons and two great-granddaughters also survive Harriette. They are Lane Gilmore Strahan, Grace Elizabeth Gilmore, Henry Webb Gilmore, Davis Powell Gilmore, Austin Vance Shea, Alexander James Xavier Slawski, Charles Lawrence Slawski, Annabel Katherine Slawski and Joseph Theodore Xavier Slawski. Sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Mary Gwen Barrington and Robert Barrington, both of Ludington, survive her. Sister-in-law, Viola Nunn of York County, Virginia, survives. Several nieces, nephews and their children, all of whom she dearly loved, survive Harriette. Mrs. Barrington’s remains have been cremated according to her wishes. A memorial service will be conducted at Trinity Evangelical Free Church at 11 a.m. on Monday, September 26. Senior pastor, the Reverend Gary Ridley, will officiate. The family will meet with friends at Trinity from 10 a.m. until the time of service. Internment will be at Peninsula Memorial Park, Newport News, Virginia. Graveside services will be held there, officiated by one or more of her nephews. They are Kenneth, William and Barry Carpenter and great-nephew Daniel Gilliam, ministers and God’s devoted servants, all. Trinity Evangelical Free Church is making the Ludington service arrangements and daughter, Susan Moorman, is making the Newport News preparations. Those who desire to make a monetary gift in Polly’s memory are encouraged to consider two very special organizations. They are Hands Extended Loving People (HELP) at 910 E. Tinkham Avenue, Ludington, MI 49431 and Hospitality INC (In the Name of Christ), which provides winter shelter for men and women in the Ludington area. Hospitality INC donations should be sent c/o Mr. and Mrs. T. Martin, 1516 N. Ivanhoe Road, Ludington, MI 49431.
