Frances Shuey Obituary

Frances Fortier Shuey age 95 passed away on August 25, 2016 in Ludington, Michigan. Born on July 8, 1921 Frances Shuey was a dedicated mother. This has always been evident by how she raised and nurtured her two children, Roy and Marie. When Fran made decisions, family came first. Educated is a word that describes Fran. Her experiences at the University of California at Berkeley enriched her memories. She strongly believed that education and acceptance of diversity could be a key to a better world. Faithful would be a word many would use to describe her. Her 50 years of service to The First Reformed Church of Schenectady in New York exemplified her passion to serve others. Fran was married to her soul mate, Richard Lyman Shuey, for 62 wonderful years. Fran was well traveled. She and her husband, Richard, loved to travel so they set a goal to travel with their children to all 50 states before they graduated from high school and left home for college. When Fran’s children were grown, she and her husband traveled to many countries. Two of her favorite adventures were trips to Alaska and the Antarctic where she had the thrill of walking amongst the penguins. Philanthropic was a way to describe Fran. She served on many committees for the less fortunate. Being a P.E.O. member for over 50 years was near and dear to her heart. She worked with Planned Parenthood and The Cancer Society for decades. Fran articulately spoke her opinion, especially if she suspected any injustice. She fought for what she believed in! As seen by her multitude of lifelong friends, Fran was a compassionate soul. Her calendar was always filled with meetings, lunches and dinners with her friends. She loved to take people to the Mohawk Golf Club when it was her turn to entertain. At their home in Niskayuna, she and her husband held annual New Year’s Eve parties for 35 years. Fran always said she was blessed to have so many long time, dear friends. After living in New York for almost 60 years, she moved to Ludington, Michigan and enjoyed living near her daughter, Marie. During the warm weather months, she and Marie loved to go down to the beach with a small hot fudge sundae and a steaming hot coffee. She treasured the quality, mother-daughter time together, watching the breathtaking Lake Michigan sunsets. Frances Shuey was truly a gracious and blessed lady. Frances is survived by her daughter: Marie (Robert) Fay, sister-in-law: Carol Browne-Shuey, grandchildren: Trevor Fay, Abigail Shuey, Susannah Shuey Drevers, Heather Shuey, Cayleigh Shuey and Daniel Shuey, numerous great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband: Richard Shuey and son; Roy Shuey. Memorial contributions can be directed to Great Lakes Caring Hospice of Michigan, Hospice of Schenectady, New York or First Reformed Church of Schenectady, New York. A beach celebration will be held Monday, September 5, 2016 at 7:30PM at Stearns Park in Ludington, Michigan by the North concession stand. If desired please bring a lawn chair. A memorial service will also be held on Sunday, September 11, 2016 at 2:00PM at First Reformed Church of Schenectady, New York.
