Anna Buttaro

Of Waltham, entered eternal rest & peace in the loving arms of her God on Wednesday morning September 21st, 2016 at the Maristhill Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in Waltham at the age of 88. Anna Josephine Buttaro also known as Sr. Mary Annice was born on August 12, 1928 in Cambridge, Massachusetts to her beloved parents the late Pasquale and Assunta (DiGiacomo) Buttaro. Sr. Mary Annice was predeceased by her loving brothers and sister John, Vincent, Anthony, and Josephine. Sister Mary Annice entered the Missionary Sisters of the Society of Mary "Marists", on July 31, 1951 in Bedford, Massachusetts and took her first Vows as a Marist Sister on February 2, 1954 in Bedford, MA. Sister was a very good seamstress, and her first assignment after Profession was sewing in Framingham, at our then Regional house. In August ,1954, Sister was assigned to St. Stephen’s Seminary in Hawaii for community service. She stayed there five years before returning to Boston in 1959. Over the years since then, Sister gave service in Staten Island at the then Marist Fathers’ Novitiate, and at our various houses in Massachusetts. In 1971, Sister left for Jamaica, W.I. where she spent six years in community service before returning to the United States once again. Sister Mary Annice began studies at Cambridge College in Cambridge, MA. and graduated in 1985 with a Masters in Education. She later went on to be accredited as a Mental Health Counselor and worked in this field until 2011. For several years, Sister was a partial caregiver to members of her family until her own health began to deteriorate in 2012 and Sister retired to her SMSM community at “62” Newton St. in Waltham. In 2016, Sister Mary Annice moved to the Care One Facility in Newton for a brief period. Sister Mary Annice leaves her dear brothers, John & Phonda of Hull, MA. , Vincent of Florida, her cherished Niece Joanne Buttaro, and cousin, John & Dianne Buttaro, as well as many friends and her devoted & loving community of Marist Missionary Sisters. Relatives & Friends are respectfully invited to attend a Mass of the Resurrection in celebration of Sister Mary Annice's Life at Sacred Heart Church, 311 River Street, Waltham on Monday morning Sept. 26th at 10:30 a.m. Interment will follow in the Marist Missionary Sisters Lot at Saint Patrick’s Cemetery in Watertown. Visiting Hours will be held prior to the Funeral Mass in Sacred Heart Church on Monday morning from 9:00-10:30am. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the: Marist Missionary Sisters 349 Grove St., Waltham, MA 02453. The Brasco & Sons Memorial Chapels of WALTHAM will be assisting the Marist Missionary Sisters with arrangements.
